New swamp creature intended for new game starts?

Hey all,

Don't wanna give away too much here, but am I the only one that thinks the new swamp critter spawns a little too much, and is a little OP? I started a new game, just got to the swamp, and within roughly 45 minutes, ran into 2 of them, and they are.... well... bullet sponges...

From what I've noticed is that the abominations seem to get more active during night time.

So if you really want to avoid them, keep an eye out at the sun and the cold / warm notifications in the top right corner.
The moment you see "cold" popping up, find yourself some shelter to last the night.

What I did in the swamp was heading out there in the "afternoon", so I could enter a sunken crypt close to nightfall, work my way through there during the night and return to my base near dawn. That way I still had to deal with the "regular" monsters, but at least avoided the aboninations.

Thorin :)

That was probably your RNG.. I have had 3 out chasing me at one time during the day. They seem to have spots RNG placed and only trigger if you get "near" one. Actually haven't noticed if there are more at night or not.

Same here. I don't get the point. Those abominations are far too strong for that level of the game. I die several times a day while farming iron. Creatures in the plains are not even close to the abominations. To kill a bunch of fulings in the plains is a piece of cake and that's meant to happen after being armed with iron stuff.
I'm sure I'm doing it wrong, but before H&H the game was playable for me, in many parts too easy. Now I'm stuck in the swamp with a destroyed portal and most likely a ship with days of farming work on the bottom of the ocean.

They are to start with. Fire and slash they are weak to.
Once you are in iron you can face tank them fairly easily.
Felt a bit soft in troll armor. They can be parried as well.

Fair enough, but it took me 15-20 minutes to kill the first, then there was another barely 15 minutes later. I just think either the spawn rate should be a little lower, or they should be a little less.... healthy...

The swamp is a very unforgiving place, if you use arrows on the abomination it will take for ever, an axe much faster.

Make sure have rested bonus, best food, stamina food for the swamp. And poison potion. Swamp is not like previous biomes, you have to plan. Go to mountains instead imo.

Coupling the fact that mobs already have unlimited stamina (or so it seems), to have that massive thing spawn that frequently just seems like a real buzz kill...

Agreed. The swamp always has been. But adding an even bigger, badder foe to a list of already incredibly dangerous list just seems like an artificial blockage when starting from scratch. Could really frustrate new players into just abandoning the game all together.

Tough call really. The powers that come with the armor are quite good for some things. Certainly going to be my new serpent hunting gear at least.

Cutting the spawns would make the armor harder to get. Making them easier to kill would make the armor too easy to get. I did kind of feel the same way you did when I first encountered them but now that I have upgraded some I feel they don't spawn fast enough so I can get the armor made and leveled.

So the balance between those two aspects seems fine to me. It certainly was intimidating the first time one came out though ha ha.

I'm just saying that, imo, either it shouldn't be such a behemoth, or it shouldn't spawn so frequently...

Nothing major. Either bump it down on spawn rate by 1 or 2 percent, or drop it's health by like 5 to 10 percent. Again, largely looking at this from the view of someone who's new to the game. I started over for a reason. :) I have a character that's full kitted and waiting for mistlands. Just wanted to see the current standing for new players.

As to the grind of getting the armor... Man... start over from the beginning... All the mining and running and adapting... that's a hell of a grind... usually takes me between 12 and 16 hours to even get to the swamp...

By what I understand so far, it's intentional that there should be a bit of a grind to get the best gear. Hell. There's only 10 spots that the merchant even spawns at, and even then, it's at least twice the distance that your mini map can see, and once he spawns, that's the only spot you'll find him in....

So... just finding the merchant to get any real use outta treasure is a grind and a half most times... Don't see why it should be different for the new armor....

Some tactics
They can't destroy the big trees. Kite them around places they will have to go around to get to you that you can pass through.

They don't seem to go too far into other biomes. Pull them out and fight them after they turn around and run away.

I have started about 20 worlds with 20 new characters. So I understand the situation.

After I killed one or two I just ran away from them, I was in troll armor. I was just scouting for iron crypts anyway. They don't seem to bother destroying a portal on top of a crypt. So you can mine around them easily. As long as you are fed and rested you can outrun them/lose them fairly easily. Once in iron you can tank them.
