Advice On Base Protection
Just got back into it and built a 3-floor base, nothing special but it's mine. Any unique ways to defend against invasions aside from trenches and spear walls?
Also, i love the new food system, don't know why some people were complaining.

Building on a hill and then mining down around said hill to create steep sides is pretty good as I think raising the ground level with the hoe can possibly have an impact on FPS whereas I think mining it's fine(?).
A large base will require multiple workbenches interspersed around the area to stop enemies from spawning inside.

I did not raise the ground here.
I dug a mote around the location and then dug away the outside wall of the mote, leveling it with the landscape and then using the cultivator to replant the foliage.

You can also build on a cliff, since spawns don't happen on steep surfaces or plant workbenches all around your base and stop spawns from happening.

find a nice easily terrace-able hilltop or an island to build on and nothing can touch you.

If they cant get to you directly they will attack your workbenches, boats...etc...there is one simple thing i swear by...just build up the terrain around where u want to build your base, about half the height of a troll, large enough surrounding the area u want to build so trolls cant throw rocks and hit your base, they will try when they cant target you and are trying to hit a workbench but cant get to it. Doing this has turned every single base assualt into a cakewalk, the enemy AI is so dumb they may try and circle around but eventually will just stand there like idiots stuck doing nothing, you can pick them all off with arrows...after setting up a base this way its never even been damaged once and i just mop up the mobs and trolls and collect all there stuff. Maybe eventually IronGate will make a better AI. Your base needs no protection... you do. They're after you, not your base.
Get away from your base, lead the mobs to you and kill them.... your base is now safe from harm ;p

Close, but no cigar.
Yes, enemies will chase a viking at least the ones that believe they have a reasonable chance to catch said viking.
I had a "The ground is shaking" event where three tolls were spawned. Two spawned outside the part of the base where I was located. The third forty or fifty meters on the other side of the base.
I went north away from the base drawing away the two closest trolls. The troll on the south side apparently decided he wouldn't get in on smashing me, so he contented himself with smashing my base. I had encircled the base with earthen walls so he couldn't reach very much.
I did circle around and draw his attention also. Once the third troll started after me, one of the trolls originally chasing me (the farthest away) gave upo the pursuit and tried his hand at wrecking my base.
In real life, no passive defense is effective in the absence of an active defender. By that I mean a defender who is actively engaging the enemy not merely quaking in his or her boots. This holds true for Valheim also. That does not mean one need not construct passive defenses.

digging around your base and/or raising the ground are the best protection.

You can build it on a big swamp tree without touching the ground.

Nothing much other than extreme measures, such as raising the ground. will completely prevent base damage during certain raids. The sharp stakes places around it will keep the greylings and whatnot from being a nuisance.

Aside from earth manipulation and wall building?? Well there isn't much else, you can strategically plant trees or plant and cut them down and align them in a way that you can only pass them above by jumping, so monsters will forever run around. Apart from breeding boars or other animals as guards, you can always build on top of trees, I have strategically planted some pine trees (extremely tall) and build on them a normal house (approx 8x6) with a few floors, so you can have different levels for different stuff (yeah it is a pain, but totally worth building for the sheer fun of it).
