I'm getting addicted to cheating... game has too much grind?

I just want to play through the plains. I don't want at all to go back to mountains, swamp, black forest, meadows for berries, etc just to get food, so I'm literally just cheating it in by now. I also cheat in building materials every now and then because I prefer to build pretty buildings without going back and forth to mine and chop down trees. I still LOVE the game, but I wish that in the later game some of these tasks could be made easier, instead of just having to pile on more and more and more chores as the game goes on.

portals, ive played through the whole game already and ive never had an issue with materials, make multiple bases for ores, make farms, make portal networks. If u want to cheat because the game is too hard for you then by all means but there already is content to make things easier, if it was any easier they might as well hand it to you

ah yes. self control is a issue now days. im playing thru without any mods or cheats.
travel is easily altered using portals, except obviously when hauling ore.. then its boat.
personally.. i have a carrot garden surrounded by a trench in the meadows as well as a boar area... with a portal. my main base is in the black forest. i have a portal for wood in the meadows i move if i run out. have a portal to the starting runes. i have a portal to other continents. a portal to the trader i built next to him up in the trees. have other portals at crypts just for hauling stuff that isnt ore and for repairs. foo di have in abundance. i have chests of deer meat. chests of boar meat. chest of queens jam. 12 bee hives with chests of honey. more carrots and such than i can even harvest at this point.
if your complaining about a lack of food or travelling for it... you got some issues.. and save your berries for jam and such. dont eat em. just eat meat and honey till you got the cooking pot. then save the special stuff for hard fights.

I kinda like the grind. (Ok, thistles have indeed been a bit annoying before H&H^^)

I assume you haven't gotten to the plains yet? It wasn't an issue for me until now, since I've gotten impatient due to having so much new content to focus on, and have gotten sick of constantly stocking up on food only to need more. Perhaps I'm overestimating what quality food I need, but the later game food takes FOREVER to get, even just a few meals worth. Wolves rarely spawn. Lox rarely spawn and take forever to kill. Thistle, well I have to search for it for a while. I have to find a ton of Draugr to make a few sausages. It's just really time consuming and boring IMO.

The big question is also how many hours this game should take to be a good game. (when it's complete)
50-100-150-200h aso? Finding the right balance for that is not easy imo.

I have a 2 star boar farm in my complex, feed all the meat to wolves, and stick wolves outside my walls. Every event, many wolves die (but they do a great job of keeping enemies from infiltrating the complex itself). This generates a lot of wolf meat. I farm onions to feed the pigs and use extra for onion soup and wolf skewers. This method seems to work well. I've started to farm lox, too, but it is a little less efficient, albeit more worthwhile. I don't leave lox unpenned because they simply rampage too much, destroying all of my out buildings and tree farms.

Fishing, though - I find it tedious. I'm not sure it's worth it.

Naah, not like that, at least for me - ofc you could count in the bosses but since it's rng where they are... idk. On one character I started building my meadows base (the first actual base) on day 100+ so it's totally up to the player, really.
As for the cheating/getting the mats for the food: To me it's actually a good thing having an actual reason to visit the other areas again after "completing" them.

Dunno, by the moment I get to Plains, I usually set to build a new main base somewhere nearby - I only build one "main" in the Meadows early, and other biomes have small outposts with a gate leading to them. Thus, I can collect all the reasources from all the outposts I've built before, and that supplies me with pretty much everything I'd need to build up.

I also take breaks from the building to think about how I want to make the next step or what else would I need, and meanwhile I mine/harvest other resources, and with all the associated gear and tech, together with marking everything marginally useful on the map, it isn't all that much effort to get them.

it is fun and kinda satisfying to spawn in a 1000 of something and watch the ball explode.

I don't think you should think of it as 'cheating', but more so that you're playing the game a different way.

For example, when Sim City 2000 became my brother's favourite game, he spawned millions of dollars and spent dozens of hours building his dream city.

Basically, if you could do it, and you're enjoying the game still, then keep doing what makes you happy. I think Valheim creative mode needs work, especially the stamina department, but if you can build something amazing via creative mode, definitely do it!

I played through the game and unlocked everything honest before I started generating my own materials and using mods. It's made it fun to keep playing and messing around. I can make outrageous builds without the tedium. I can go on adventures, without the monotony of gathers.

When the game is finished or after the next biome release i'll probably play through again clean. But for now , no harm done.

I'm interested in building and exploring, but I have come to despise combat more than I did when I was young (I've never particularly enjoyed action combat), so I have used the console almost from the start. Killing off the monsters with the console has made this game into something that I can truly enjoy - essentially a massive sandbox in which I can build anywhere. Initially, I only used the console to kill monsters, so the only materials I collected via console commands came from monster loot. Now I am building a transportation network over a large portion of the world. Collecting massive quantities of wood and stone for bridges, paved roads, and other structures was taking too long, so I finally surrendered to the full-blown creative mode. After the roads and bridges are all built, and I start improving the bare bones bases and outposts, I intend to pull back from this and see if I can build nice bases out of resources hauled along the roads. I am not using portals in this world - I want to see how much bother it is using a road network instead.

Everyone has different levels of tolerance for challenges and grind that the game throws at us. In single player mode, I see no problem with using the console to bypass elements that we don't enjoy or that start to get dull. It beats using a sector editor on a floppy disk, which is what I used to do back in the 1980s.

I have completed massive infrastructure projects with friends. Roads and bridges, and outposts/bases through massive continents. It's a lot of fun. Clear cutting a 20-30 foot pass through massive forrests... etc
