Has it gotten better?

I picked this up a while ago, played with it for a bit, and found it very clumsy, awkward and counter-intuitive. I haven't so much as encountered, let alone engaged with a single mini-boss, as I find I spend more time running across the entire map trying to shake a single skeleton, armed with a bow and an infinite supply of arrows, because they have flawless tracking and near flawless aim because I've worn out every weapon I have and can't stop to pick up so much as a stick or wind up a pin-cushion trying.

I think there's a lot of potential, but I've been on a 3-month break from this, hoping it gets better.

game simply isnt meant for everyone. its working fine for people who enjoy what it aims to be currently given the reviews. for anything else you can cheat/mod like you want in singleplayer.

due to that game is pretty much as "accessable" as it gets already. could add a colorblind mode of course.

The occasional skeleton in the meadows is night only. Night is more dangerous... these spawn at the grave sites where you have above ground bones in a little rock hut.

when running, break LOS for a min and hide, and it will look for you a bit and go away. If you can't hide, it will keep seeing you and keep chasing you. This takes a little practice, but it will escape all but the fastest couple of enemy. ruins/buildings are great to hide in. Instances don't always work, but when you exit, immediately hide and it may be ok.

There is a lot of randomness in the game, and it sounds like you got some bad luck right off and gave up right away. Maybe try again using some of the advice here an other 'what to do when new' threads to see if its as broken as you suggest or if its one of those things that happens here and there.

Some people hate dying. I get it. But think of it this way, you already died, that's why you're in Valheim. If a skeleton is chasing you through the forest, stop and think about why. Is it Karma ? Were you a bad person in your previous life ? Maybe you deserve to die to an old enemy you slew and sent to Valheim ? The Gods are cruel and Odin is the cruelest of them all! Embrace the death, grow stronger (not really, you lose skill points) and most important of all, Keep Calm and Carry On.

Fun game, with a little patience to learn the systems and adapt, it's quite fun if you like survival crafting exploration games (and vikings, of course).

Dying isn't a problem, and while yes, I can side-step and bash bare-handed, because even my club is broken, it does not make for engaging or even remotely fun gameplay.

Sticking the meddows isn't going to cut it when I need resources that aren't found in meddows, so I have to venture out, a little further, then a little further, each time I need something else.

I'm also a half-centurian, with exceptional reflexes, and I do the Running Away because it's a faster and better option than standing there playing slug-fest with a boner. They just don't discourage or run out of arrows, so they're annoying. So is chasing around a crow for little hints and clues, especially when it has a habit of landing right in the middle of the largest group of hostiles around.

Will keep watching though - things will either get better, and I'll take up playing again, or they're stay the same, and this will languish at 3.7 hours until Steam decides on its own that it's not installed any more, and I hide it like the other titles Steam has done this with, for whatever reason.

What a sad take on the game. Maybe survival isn't your thing. If you're trying to say you're age 50+ so that matters for something--not sure what, exactly. What does that have to do with success in the game? Learn the mechanics and progression, be patient and aware and prepared, you'll do fine. Age doesn't matter.

If you run past other targets, the skeleton can get distracted. It will aggro just about anything in the area, deer, necks, boars, greys. They hate everything. Might be easier to punch a neck or a boar following you than the skeleton.

You can also use trees to shield you. There's no cover in an open field, and nothing that will slow them down. If you do decide to punch it, hide behind a tree until it gets close.

In other games, mobs have a short leash and don't chase very far. In this game they will chase as long as it's easy for them to do so. But they may lose interest if they can't see you, keep getting caught up on terrain or fallen logs, or find something easier to attack. When running away the worst thing to do is head for open space. You can navigate obstacles much better than they can.

That's how the game goes. You go in prepared to win, or you go in prepared to lose.

Marginally.

I think the big problem is that they don't add more options to make the game more accessible. The one option I would like added is monsters attacking your bases. If they added that the game would be at least be playable and less self flagellation.

Uh, that's happened to me, several times. There is usually some message about it, just before they start spawning in in waves. It's not particularly difficult, more annoying, as this usually happens when it's getting dark, I'm exhausted from spending all day cutting down trees and picking up bits of this and that to build that other thing I need, in order to build that thing I want, to be able to build that other thing I really need.

It gets progressively harder as you progress the game. Grey dwarves might not be a problem. But multiple trolls that can smash your stuff in one hit or take away half your health in a hit is a different story.

Combine that with a few mobs that wander in because it's night time. Then it's raining and cold so you aren't stats don't regen like they usually would and it becomes an issue.

To be fair, you can sidestep the skeletons' arrows and bash their face in with your fists, if you need to; all it takes is some rudimentary timing, and I'm speaking as a 50-ish guy who doesn't play first-person shooters any more because his reflexes are shot. I'm not trying to say "git gud", but "running away" isn't the solution you're looking for.

Combat (as with everything else in this game) is actually relatively slow-paced. In addition, auditory cues are as important as visual ones. I would like to recommend that you get a shield, and just hold block while some meadows mobs hit you, so you can learn about their timing... and once you have the timing figured out, you can dance right up and poke 'em in the nose any time; whether you have a weapon, or a shield, or not. Bare-knuckle brawling even the Black Forest's graydwarves is totally doable (although you might wanna wait until you have some way to mitigate poison damage before tangling with the shamans, and a shield is highly recommended for the brutes).

Learning to dodge-roll is important, too, but it can wait until you've got the hang of block/parry. That single mechanic is a game-changer.

The skelly is one level up from the start. You can beat them with a wooden club, blunt damage, but its going to be a tough battle early on. Stay in the meadow till you get used to the game.

Two points:
1: You can actually beat a skelly man with your fists, and it's not that difficult a 1v1 fight once you've learned the mechanics. It's tedious without a stick, but not difficult.
2: Skeletons can spawn in the meadows, near those little rock hut things.
