Whats your thought on magic?
I honestly don't like the addition of magic to players, i feel vikings were more into rituals and herbalism stuff
i would rather have only buffs like increasing stamina hp regen, atk spd, atk dmg out of plant rituals and trophy sacrifices than fireballs...
i think they got this wrong, mages just makes like any other MMO

The ice staff is kind of good against seekers, the summoned skeletons become pretty strong at high skill level, combined with blood staff protection bubble they‘re helpfull. But overall magic is rather underwhelming and i don‘t really use it anymore, maybe this will change once you can upgrade galdr table further.

...the food prep/consumption component is tedious...I'd have gone with 'wisp power' instead of actively needing to achieve the mechanic. Wisps for mist repelling mist is somewhat underwhelming, so there really is no practical use for the collector or wisps...and having to clear dungeons for 'royal jelly' to make the food, m'eh.

At first I didn't like the addition. But now that i'm using it, it's growing on me. It is fun to run through the plains and just drop a fire ball on a growth from a distance out or have a protective bubble eat up some HPs before your own health, etc. I'm cool with it but would have been just fine without it also.

Love it. I also get your point, but this is a mystical world and pretty sure that if Vikings could harness this kind of magic, they sure would.
You're also not forced to use, so you can avoid it if it bothers you. I'd say you're missing out on a lot of fun, though.

It is enjoyable, but I personally thought such an injection of magic would have been more along the lines of runes we could inscribe on weapons/armor for different effects and/or stat increases.
However the system we were given is still enjoyable.

It works just fine for Valheim. You're stealing tools, items and other powers of your enemies all the way to mistlands. It makes sense that the magic used in the 10th world would be greater than mere runes, and you've got that sort of thing available to you already in form of portals, wards, moderately magical equipment like Frostner, and so on.
Like most things, magic sticks that shoot fire and frost only seem bad if you fade out everything else from the game around them, but no game feature exists in a void.

I tend not to isolate my view to some classical canon of vikingdom. Sure, we can say Danes, Swedes, Norwegians are what most historians rely on for literature. I can appreciate such a purist view, but after all, Valheim is a fantasy game.
Now, when we expand our thoughts to celts, such as picts, where the classical historian view of 'normans' are coming a bit later to the scene.. there could be some deep rooted fey culture. Tuatha, Tir na nOg, Seelie and unseelie.. there is a lot of additional lore to be held to. I mean, iirc scandanavia was inhabited by neanderthals for some time period when ♥♥♥♥ sapien sapien were starting to migrate north..
So what magic lives in our imaginations? What lore and tales spin the yarn of pre-viking history? Dwarves, after all, are quite a Gaul-ish invention, yes? Their version of fairies, not dissimilar to Shintoism, but giant and unseen. So, sure, why not magic?
No, I don't mean the romanized druish sacrifice or 19th century anglicized wicca. The sea-faring folk who lived in western europe long before vikings, who were eventually overrun with anglos, saxons, and normans.. I am talking clear back to the times of Kemet and Iberia.. don't you buy into the idea that some ancient sleeping fae exist within that misty unknown?
Just offering the other viewpoint. There are plenty of hard-lined players out there who want that normalized historical viewpoint. Sword and board. By the book. I am sure we have not heard the last of "Vikings are this and that" from experts in this thread. Heh. For me, it will continue to be just a game though. It is a helluva lot of fun!
Troll on, my dudes and dudettes.

I mean anyone would use it, it is certainly quite useful, Im gonna use it if it makes easier to deal with those nasty mistland creatures,
but why summon skeletons if you tamed wolves? make a ritual to rebirth a regular wolf into a warg or something

As much as I love Necromancy in any game I can get it, necromancy and the current iteration of magic in Valheim definitely feels like a miss, for me.
I would have greatly preferred them implementing some sort of rune-enchanting form of magic, adding temporary elemental damage to weapons or temporary resistances/effects to equipment.
If ranged damage had to be implemented, some form of druidic/runic way of doing things should have been explored, rather than just plain RPG staff o' fireball.
And please... Dead Raiser? Thats the best name they could come up with for the Necromancy implement? That and Fish n' bread are tied for most 6th grade naming scheme ever.
It really feels like they brought on a bunch of new ppl post Hearth & Home and the influx of people diluted the game's core identity and theme.

I get where you're coming from and your arguments make sense. But I just don't feel strongly enough about it especially as you only get it as you reach the final part of the game. In the end, it gives you more options, and you can choose to ignore magic or try it out.

I agree, Magic was more the domain of the gods and the shamans (even though went through rituals)

I think it would have been nice if they focused their energies on fixing issues that have plagued the game since launch instead of adding an entirely new school of combat. Fixing melee combat comes to mind.

I mean, i like the idea of expanding the combat,
i just thought that could be done within what the game already sold,
maybe add more movesets for weapons, dual wielding?
magic could come as altar to thor for buffs to a berserker build, or to freya for a valkyrie,
jewelry instead of staves

I like those ideas to make existing combat deeper, maybe even augments for existing weapons to change or boost damage types. I have mixed feelings about magic but I'm also ok to be surprised by the developers.
