Question about sea serpents
I'm in the early-ish game (Black Forest biome) and decided to use my Karve to map the coastline of the starting island, because it's massive. So far I've been at it for 6 game-days, and have about 2/3 done.
My question is, could I end up running into sea serpents even this close to the very starting island, if I venture into the Ocean biome while doing this?
So far I've mostly stuck close to the coast (so not in Ocean biome), but passing an area of the Swamp I ventured farther out when I saw a ton of these black slug-like things and some green oozing blob things swimming out to get me.

Actually they can. The OP had a huge start island 2/3rds the way around it in 6 days of sailing. If you are more than 500 meters from the starting stones and you enter ocean or sail at night near the shore a sea serpent can spawn. They DO NOT spawn near the starting island. Theres a video on YT that goes into detail about this and shows the perimeter at which they start spawning. Research it 😎😇
Yep! I was going to reply to him saying the same thing...because I ended up running into a serpent just yesterday, right outside the river inlet to my base (on that Starting island).
I was sailing against the wind to go check out the island right next door when I saw it chasing me down, but fortunately I was able to turn around and get the wind to my back to get away.

I had one spawn in a literal lake so close to spawn it was visible from the shoreline inside the meadows ring that exists around spawn. There was like a patch of ocean in the middle and it spawned in it.

I had a large lake like body of water in the middle of my starting island[large enough to be labeled 'Ocean'], as they say at sea, 'There be monsters'...wrecked me but good yards from shore, was almost there...

In my first world, spawn was very close to the beach, and Elkthyr was just across a small body of water (you could easily see to the other side, but swimming was not really an option). The first sea serpent I saw was in that water, so they can/could be close to spawn.

I think you can, but if you do, you should be able to get into shore before a sea serpent destroys your Karve. Best thing to do is to sail by day and have a reasonable exit plan - someplace reasonably close and safe to steer your boat toward, if you get surprised by a serpent.

If the wind is at your back and you are at full sail you can outrun them.

Cool. Thank you!
That's how I've been doing things already, but I had no idea if it actually made a difference or not; I was just doing what made sense to me without any game knowledge. LOL
It has been kind of fun watching the shore line for a ruined structure of some kind each time the sun was approaching setting, so that I could make a quick camp to rest the night with just minimal additional construction.
