Is it worth starting a new game?
I haven't played in about a year, and I was told that old saves are no longer compatible (i.e. worlds will not update to the new updated zones). Would it be better to wait until the updated Mistlands, because I would hate to start now only to have to trash all my work all over again in 5-6 months from now.

I must have missed that or the crow forgot to mention it. I could only craft a couple of things and none of them was a workbench. Last thing the crow said was go find shelter and get warm, so of I trotted but couldn't find a house with a fire anywhere.Right there where you spawn in is this suspicious looking glowing red stone thingy. Started playing to day and I don't get it. After a conversation with a crow I ran around for two hours not knowing what I was suppose to do. Nothing happened in those two hours. Is this like a tree hugging walking sim?
Interact with that.

Hold a hammer in your hand and right click to get a menu. Then you can build a workbench if you have ten wood. Once you have a workbench, you can use the hammer to build a small house. The workbench will need to be inside the house before you can use it to build and repair your gear.

The crow tells you lots of stuff and it is easy to just click past it without reading it.I must have missed that or the crow forgot to mention it. But you want to read all that stuff it is important. If you want to check what he already said you can hit Tab and click on the crow icon in the upper right. The compendium will have all his game hints that you have been given so far.

First thing would be to pick up basic, common-sense materials to collect larger resources, so stones and wood. Then, make what tools you can from your inventory and collect said, bigger resources.
Then, form a workbench, create a structure to set a spawn point, cook food, rest, store items etc, and then explore to your hearts content.
Unsure if you're comment was intended to be a joke or not, harder to convey over text.

The Upgrade World mod / tool includes custom commands specifically to regenerate the new features missing from legacy worlds. The save won't be strictly incompatible without that, only missing some resources in explored regions.

I start a new game all the time. Whether its because I tire of my current seed or I feel I messed up enough times to warrant a new go. I'm weird like that though.

I haven't played in about a year, and I was told that old saves are no longer compatible (i.e. worlds will not update to the new updated zones). Would it be better to wait until the updated Mistlands, because I would hate to start now only to have to trash all my work all over again in 5-6 months from now.
Some things to understand perhaps first:
1. If you have come close to or explored biomes that have had updates, then yes, those locations will not be updated with the new items or features overall. However placed that are far from where you've explored and thus havent come close to exploring will have those sections updated. So if you've exposed your whole map, then yes a new map will be necessary.
2. Making a new map doesnt actually trash your work. Think of exiting 1 map and getting on another in a play session like a teleport/portal and this becomes less frustrating.
3. If you have not traveled far and wide on a map and gotten remotely close to the locations that have mistland biomes on your map, then the likelihood you'd need to move to a new map becomes less. However again, new map means it'd be guaranteed to have all new necessary spawns of stuff once the mistlands biome released.
4. There has been many various things added to the game since you were gone including addtions to biomes(ice caves and such in the snow biome is a perfect example but not the only one). You could make a new map now, explore and do stuff with the new map and then just make another new one once mistlands comes out. Many don't see that as a bad thing, especially if you like building. You can easily move items and resources from one map to another. The only thing you cant are tames but most of those take little time to replace. Or you can always opt to use admin commands to spawn in otherwise.
All in all things really are just going to depend on your willingness with choices.

No since there isnt much new stuff and most new stuff will be in your game even if you dont restart.
But i think it would be worth it to restart the game with the updates and some mods like Valheim Plus and Epic Loot.
If you dont want to do that - whats stopping you from using your existing character in a new save and transport your stuff to the new world?

Either you like the game and play it now, then you won't mind starting over with a new seed.
Or you don't like it (or it's in the "meh" category), then you won't like it much better when the mistlands will hit.
Valheim is not just a plain action game. A lot of it is the exploration of a new seed and the building of new bases. The lure of the ocean.
If that doesn't sound attactive to you (and it may not), then Valheim is probably not your cup of tea.

I started playing again after doing everything when it first came out. It is still fun, but I don't think they've added very much to the game. Development speed is very slow. I'm not going to go deep into the game again until at least mistlands.
