Boat needs head lights

Wandering the ocean and trying to make it to a base. Taking the long way around in uncharted waters. Got caught as the night fell - not a problem - just go slow and keep an eye on the shore. Until - Mistlands. Quick , 180 degrees. I was in my traveling gear, not fighting gear, and I was freezing. Wasn't to keen on lighting a campfire in my boat.

My question is: Is the Mistlands still devoid of life? Would there be anything in there to explore? Ok. 2 questions.

Ok, a third question. Since i entered, would this spawn normally when Mistlands arrive OR did I just ruin an area for the update?

When you approach the shore remain far enough away so that the boat remains floating free, even at low tide. Make sure the boat is at a complete standstill, no forward or rearward movement and the sail is furled. Then jump or swim to shore, the boat will remain where you left it, no matter the weather.

It is one of the mechanics of the game.
Thank you. Good to know.

Night sailing is treacherous!
Then don't sail at night? When the sun starts going down, beeline for shore, portal home and go to bed. Portals are the most important thing to carry on any boat trip, don't leave home without it.

How does this preclude the use of torches, oil lamps and candles...all of which the vikings had access to?

Vikings, according to historians & archaeologists, did not have light systems on the bow.

Wow, great conversation here. I was asking about the Mistlands, but we got a conversation about boat lighting. I was wearing my little head lamp at night and it really does nothing. If the weather is fair at night, you can make out the shore, but not all rocks. If it is stormy, you are screw'd. You really need to go at paddle speed and hope for daylight.

It would be nice to have little inlets or bays to 'safe harbor' in, or drop anchor if we had one. I tried that, but I got pushed slowly into shore or in my case into a swamp.

Which ones? Because they did have the limited lighting sources I just told you about. Vikings also didn't sail alone as they do in Valheim--which, is a fantasy.

Several times before the update (dunno about after) I had ships landed ashore that got picked up by the tide and floated away. So now, I take the boat apart, put it in a crate near the workbench then map mark it and go back to it. An anchor would have solved that problem. It would also mean being able to drop it at sea and wait the night, out safe from anything but sea creatures.

There are some features (including lack of light/anchors) that become obvious frustrations when playing solo.

If it wouldn't be such a hassle with linux and game-breaking updates, I'd run mods to fix this sort of thing.

I'm totally onboard with being able to hang a lantern at the prow of the Karve and Longship, or even just on the mast.

I'd also like to be able to craft shields to line the gunnels, because serpents are jerks, but that's a different issue.

IRL vikings didn't sail at night unless they were forced to, out at sea. That said, in this game we're forced to do so unless we want to be attacked by fantasy creatures that we aren't equipped to handle...with exceptionally poor night vision to boot. Not like we can just find a quiet spot to land before dusk LOL

Sailors did use exterior lights on their ships at night. These were not head lights but navigation lights. Their purpose was not to illuminate the sea surrounding the ship but rather to make the ship visible to other ships and sailors.

I only play solo. I do not need to make my ship visible to others. If I did play with a group, I would only need to make my ship visible if there were ships made by others in the group and we wanted to sail at night at the same time in the same vicinity.

In short, lights available on sailing ships were useless to see where the ship was going. A head light would, in fact, hinder navigation at night because it would wreck the sailor's night vision.

I'd be inclined to agree with this if the game's night vision wasn't so poor. Also, most shores were empty and not full of creatures or humans so it was easy to dock quickly for the night. Also...anchors.

I just want something that doesn't make sailing such an undeniable death trap and annoyance between the inability to land at dusk, rocks and sandbars that can't be seen because the "night vision" is so poor and flying enemies near the shore lines making the trip more treacherous and annoying than it needs to be even without sailor error.

If you only exposed a section of that specific Mistlands area, only that section exposed/explored will remain a null area for future updates, under the current developer's mechanics. To the best of my knowledge, only those players who have explored the vast majority of their seed's map, including Mistland biomes have cause for concern.

Using the head light from the merchant would really only work if you have a second player at teh front of your boat, otherwise you just light up the sail and make deatils of what is in front of hte boat harder to see.

Just a little tid bit of useful trivia, the entire area out to a max of about 500 meters from the player gets generated and marked as "explored". Which can go a fair bit beyond what shows up in your view.

After the Mistlands gets added if you are not averse to using mods and wish to keep your current world I can recommend the "Upgrade Worlds" mod
https://valheim.thunderstore.io/package/JereKuusela/Upgrade_World/
it resets the map, excluding areas you define in the mod's config file, to an "unexplored" status so when you go back to that place new content can be added. (Oh, and the server devcommands mod is only required if you have a server)

Also handy is the Map Coordinate display to give you the locations to put into the config file I mentioned above.
https://www.nexusmods.com/valheim/mods/907

I've used both and they have worked exactly as descripped. After I reset my world except for my main base and a Plains Island I use for farming I re-explored a mountain top I cleared before onions were added and found onion seeds, and all the mine pits were gone too.

remember to make a backup of your world before using.

Go buy the head light from trader works good for boats
Yea there is nothing in the mist as of yet and yes that area of the mistlands that you touched is ruined
To keep areas like that safe for updates you need to leave them unexplored
