Yeah, be sure you have enough stamina. Once the fish is hooked stamina will start to drain very fast.
I cast as far as I can, wait 2-3 seconds and start reeling back. As i understand, bigger fishes are far away so you have to lure them towards the shore. When the bait is somewhere between 10 and 15 meters i stop and wait. At this distance i can observe fishes and see when they are about to catch the bait. You have to start reeling as soon as they take the bait or they will escape really quick (1-2 seconds).

should mention at this point that Flametal doesn't currently have a use in the game right now. but its easy to stock up on right now for later as the only mobs in the Ashelands are Surtlings.

down side is getting close to the Ashlands will mark everything within 500 meters or you as "explored" so new content won't be added to in later patches. There also isn't a lot of the biom so you might end up with most of it "explored" before the biom even gets real content. like I did :(

Okay how far into the game are you? you are asking questions that you should have an answer to by playing the game.

iron is in the swamp biome, you need a swamp key to unlock crypt and a pickaxe to mine it once inside

Level 2 is the flint chopping block
Level 3 is the tanning rack
Level 4 is the Adze made with bronze
Level 5 needs Iron

You can get to a level 4 Bench pretty quick but the Tool Shelf requires Mountain stuff and an Iron Pickaxe (unless you get creative with a Stone Golem).
