I just finished building a chest room, even though it's a temporary base, and I only (currently) have 6 chests. I started out with each chest having a category, but they all fill up at some point, then you put stuff in other chests to just get it out of your inventory, which causes a mess. It also causes duplication, which exacerbates the problem.

You really need (at least) twice the number of chests over the minimum to hold all your stuff so you can keep stuff organized and not keep filling up chests. Fortunately I'm at the intersection of plains and swamp (and a strip of mistlands), so I have easy access to iron and fine wood. I also just remembered that I can build black metal chests, which is even better!

One of the first things i make, is a small warehouse. Even if it's just 12 chests, those 12 chests help me a lot for the first 2 biomes before i make my larger house with a large inventory of chests.

I do, but that's largely because i got sick of going through like 8 chests, not finding what i needed, going out and getting more of it, only to realize "OH wait! I left the last trip in the cart...I had enough all along" or similar. It can already be a bit grindy sometimes without self-sabotaging with poor organization in this game.

It's nice knowing where things are, it's part of the human condition.

Edit: Also, the quick stacking for chests is coming.

There's mods you can use where you can craft an item as long as the materials are nearby in a chest/container.
