What happens to karves/longboats after you are killed?
Hi,
I was on a expedition to explore part of my seed when I was attacked by sea creatures of some kind. I managed to reach some land but it was “the plains” … so I was killed shortly after I made landfall.
I’d travelled 3 in-game days at sea before this and was very close to my objective.
If I head back there then will my longboat still be there or will it have been destroyed?
(I understand I can can just build another boat but part of my RP is to head back and retrieve my lost equipment. I was going to build a karve and set up camp on a nearby island before I made an attempt to enter the plains on a rescue mission).
Thanks in advance for any help .. I’m new(ish) to the game and slow playing it so far.

Thanks all ....
I've made it to the bonemass area and built a base ... and a treehouse built above the base.
Only I didn't bring any fine wood so I can't build a portal to get back home ... another mistake to learn from.
Good to know my longboat will survive an attack ... and that I can do battle from it.
It was a simple panic that caused my previous trouble ... didn't want to die at sea so I hopped onto land ... and was dead within 20 secs when some insects arrived.
But ... this is how you learn to play the game.
My plan is to take down Bonemass and see what that gets me ... and then regroup and go resource collecting.
Secure and improve my bases my bases, build lots of new goodies and head off for more adventures with almost certain death involved.

Ohh … I’ll be avoiding the plains for a while now.
My bonemass is about half a days sailing from the plains area where I died. I was looking for a spot to make a base when I was attacked by the serpent and as I was hugging the shoreline I thought I’d step onto land … my mistake.
I can just see a slight outline of swamp to the north of me … and there’s a little island (meadows) nearby to use as a staging post.
I enjoy the exploring part and don’t use an internet map of my seed.
If I can ask another quick question? ….
If I continue to explore swamp tombs … will I find other bonemass locations that could be nearer to my home location?
The one listed on my map is quite a distance away and although it’s fun to explore the map for all I know there might be another bonemass very near to me in unexplored land.
And thank you for those tips, GunForBucks.
Yes, there are random spots for all Boss spawn points. I've found a few Elder spots very close to each other. Best of luck in your adventures

I wouldn't bet on this ... I think, the nearest one gets marked anyway ... so as long as you haven't been very far away anyway, it looks like to be the most close one to your home.

So, as far as your question about finding closer Bonemass spawns goes:
A Vegvisir will only reveal the closest spawn to it. If another Bonemass is revealed, it's going to be just about as far away.
SOURCE: I have two elder spawns revealed - one to the north of my initial base, and one to the southeast.
Also, serpents should not be a problem if you can build a longboat. the iron quality bow does a pretty good job of chunking it down, even with lower quality arrows.

As long as nobody is there, the area isn't calculated. But if you get close, there may be aggro enemies attacking the boat ...
... if it get's destroyed, the ressources will stay there, also the contents of it's container. So you still could rebuilt it in that case.

Thank you …
I’ll start getting ready for my retrieval mission.
And all because I set out to build a forward base to attack Bonemass… I’ve died a few times try to get to him … just need to find a nice place to set up camp and build a portal to make my life a little easier.

The boat materials can despawn or just be too deep to pick up. If you are setting up a base to deal with bonemass you really don't want to get anywhere near the plains. A longboat really can take quite a few hits... did you not have a bow to shoot the sea serpent with?
If you could not deal with the sea serpent in a long boat I think the last thing you want to do is keep feeding him while you get killed going there in a karve.
Make sure to mark each death location as they will vanish off your map when you die again... but honestly I think you would be better off remaking your gear and getting the stuff later than risk a lot of skill loss.
