Don't kid yourself, they're called "devcommands" for a reason. Use them at your discretion, but be warned that you can brick your world.

I wonder why people don't understand that allowing players to switch worlds, and not allowing them to transport ore through portals isn't a contradiction.

Players are supposed to play their character on one world to completion. They are not allowed to transport ore to facilitate exploration, especially by boat, as vikings were avid and accomplished sailors.

That said, they also made it a convenience thing to allow your character after that to visit other worlds, so they can explore them at their leisure. They're still not allowed to move ore by portals, but you can move ore over from your OLD world, if you so desire.

And again, there's the old adage, that just because you CAN do something, doesn't mean that you SHOULD.

There is something called self restraint ;)

Of course it is cheating (don't try to pretty it up using the thesaurus.) Just because you can doesn't mean you should. That being said it's your game play how you like, but don't kid yourself, if it feels like cheating... it probably is.

Might as well just use console commands while your at it if you're doing this.

Don't worry about it. It's your game and it's a built in mechanic. Are you going to ask if portals are cheesing next?

There are many who consider other maps they transfer to as "portals".

There are also mods that allow metal portaling.

Devs when they originally were making decisions on such things, the head of the game wanted there to be no portals. Others wanted portals for everything. The compromised settled on was what you see now so even on the dev team there is not a full consensus really.

Thus do as you wish and play the game as you wish, devs did let you play the game in that manner (else you'd not be able to switch around with inventories) so consider that as well.

You do whatever you want to do. As long as you're only doing it alone in your own world.

If you do it in multi-player... well, it's up to whoever runs that world. *shrug*

The consensus is yes, it’s cheesing (and cheating). Doesn’t really mean much in a single player game but yeah it’s not intended.

The reason I would question it is that developers implemented a mechanic to prevent players from transporting ore through portals.

Why are characters allowed to travel to different world with not only all of their equipment intact but also the entire content of their inventory? So developers knew that players could use this mechanic to cart large quantities of ore but chose not to implement a game mechanic linking ore to a specific world.

So it's not entirely clear. Linking ore to a specific instance of a world would probably not require a lot of code. So why have developers left that grey area in the game?

The character <> world relationship in this game is very surprising. It seems to be completely accepted to have 1 given character explore many different worlds. I'm not sure why the devs didn't decide to tie a character to a single specific world. It may be an escape hatch in case of really bad seed, or a conscious gameplay decision.

In any case, I would consider this cheating yes. We know that the impossibility of teleporting ores is very conscious and intentional. That being said, you do you :)
