Need advice on roof building
I am constructing a castle and I just finished putting up the walls. The building has a large footprint (something like 15-20x15-20 and a slight L shape. The typical straight angle roof I normally use for wood structures will not work here due to both the shape and footprint of the structure. (the roof would be taller than the structure itself) Using stone pads for the roof is also not really viable given how large most of the rooms are so I don't really know how to cover this structure. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Yeah that works, looks ok as well. When upgrade to the tile based roof it will look better.
If you look at an actual longhouse you will see that so much of it, is just roof. But I would like to see a whole bunch more roofing options so that a curved ridge roof is possible. Even a stepped ridge roof is tricky and time consuming given standard building block is 1m, a 0.5m piece would be useful in roofing.

If this posts correctly, here is a picture of my roof I made, it uses both the outward and inward corner pieces. Coming in from all sides saves on height.

Iron framed stone works well, but depends on what you want. If happy to use columns do that. Dont forget if you place fast enough you can squeeze blocks together that would normally collaape.

Dont want to use iron?
Then this

Iron can be seen due to building very high, but your building is not big enough to need it yet.

What I ended up doing was watching a few build vids from other people and learned how they solved the problem and it worked for me.

If it is just for aesthetics you can use the corrugated cardboard trick. Drop down 1 meter and put wood flooring on, alternate 26 degree thatch roofing to make the corrugations, and put wood flooring on top of that. Looks smooth from the top and the bottom and keeps the weather out. The top floor tiles weather down to 50% health but no farther. You can cut a smoke hole through and put a chimney cap over that to let smoke out if the inner roof is too close to the fire to allow dissipation.

Have you been using a typical "A" frame roof until now and not joining perpendicular section together? If you have an L shape, the corner pieces in the build menu will help you fill in the odd shape, you will have to experiment. To avoid a super high roof, you can use the 26 degree shingles or build it up from all of your walls simultaneously.
It's a little hard for me to describe, but try building a 4x4 structure and have 2 regular shingles in the middle sections all around and use the corner pieces in the four corners. It takes practice, at least it did for me. I hope that helps.

Yeah I have been using A frame so far. When I say L it is barely an L The section sticking out is like 10-15 floors long when the longest point is 15-20. This is kind of why it is a problem as it is practically a 20x20 box and even with the shorter roof parts the roof will still end up almost as tall as the structure itself. Could you provide a few screenshots to give a better idea of what the uncovered areas you want to fill in look like?

The roofs that are currently there are temporary.

For big stone buildings you really need to use a wood-iron frame.

If you use the stone pillars, you should be able to support the stone floor 2x2 as roofs. You likely won't even need them in those areas that have temporary roofs.Could you provide a few screenshots to give a better idea of what the uncovered areas you want to fill in look like? https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2977590231

What's the goal here? You don't want the roofs to rise above the walls? You don't want to use thatch roofs? You want flat roofs and/or ceilings?

I just did not want the roof to be the same size as the building itself as it would look stupid. I took the advice in the prior post and used iron beams to support the roof and used stone everywhere other than the foundry as I would have to raise the entire structure up another block to be high enough for the smelters and it needs ventilation anyway.https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2977590231If you use the stone pillars, you should be able to support the stone floor 2x2 as roofs.
