How will this game progress beyond 10-player private servers?

Given that anyone can just cheat-command themselves all the best gear available, what prospect is there for Valheim multiplayer as anything other than a BYOF mini-node what-happens-on-my-server-doesnt-matter-because-you-can-take-anything-with-you-to-another-server free for all?

Not every game needs to be a MOBA pubfest with gamewide character progression that is centrally tracked and balanced for every server everywhere.

Valheim is a game about death, and overcoming it. Death is an experience best shared among friends... much like a dedicated Valheim server. Some gracious people may leave servers open to random people, but by and large, those you are playing with are supposed to be there because you know them.

This is what games used to be like before Web2 and the dark times - back when games looked and played the way Valheim is designed to look and play. And frankly, it made for better games.

@op Yes there needs to be Tick boxes to set your server up with options to stop cheats.

This would require a vast anticheat system implemented that would cost more money then they made of selling the game and guess what? it wouldn't stop the cheaters at all since cheats can literally be implemented on kernel levels. Look at GTA, Diablo series, and all those other games. Those are online only and what not and yeah just a mess. lol. Even in those FPS shooter games that are online only there are "Scripts" that they run to cheat. Those are even easier to make than the mods they have now for people to cheat. So lets think about what we wish for.

I do not know how hard it would be to implement Option changes when configuring your Server.
Steam has very good anti cheat software, but what I and others wish for are only suggestions.

It's even worse.

The ability to console-command one's self into unearned glory is built into the game itself, and then its ecosystem. Why should anyone run and maintain an open Valheim server that allows anyone and their dog who watched some youtube video about how to maximize their character -- without earning it -- to run amok on the generated landscape?

What incentive is there at all for people to host servers except for private groups of less than 10 concurrent users who they, by a best guess, won't upset the balance of their server too much? Is there a plan to make this insanely fun game more approachable to the casual multiplayer player? Is there a plan to sort the chaff from the wheat when selecting multiplayer servers?

Death is an experience best shared among friends... Hope you're not speaking from empirical experiences >:D While I can appreciate that the sentiment is personal, not everyone gets to experience death among friends. Or, more practically, not everyone gets to know someone who has a Valheim server where they can go crash a longboat into a serpent while everyone else aboard is taking a bathroom break and then have to explain why all their gear is gone.

Yes, it's a social thing. And along that same corollary, social things aren't necessary engraved in stone. It can simply mean whoever is there at the time.

Take a cruise trip, for example. Most of the people there don't know each other. But they share the social experience. They're there for that social experience. The social experience is the reason why they booked the ticket instead of watching some VR tourist vid. Or maybe they did that too, but they still booked the ticket. That's what the internet has done for gamers; you don't have to be banging their sister to play a multiplayer game with them. So why book a ticket on Valheim Advendures?

Again, I pose the question. How does Valheim progress beyond the very nordic, closed-off 10-person private server? Or does it? That's really the core of my question: does this get anywhere beyond some cliquey chums with a dork friend who knows how to host a server?

Still havent heard of a game that can't be cheated on. Scripts and loaders are easier to make than anything and the only games that do not have cheats in them are ones that are like tournaments and what not where the company that is hosting them and letting the people use their pc's to play them to ensure there are no cheats.

You just literally cannot stop cheating and since its easier to do than stop, we should debate how much security we want to try and implement.
