Bait a troll from black forest. Stay near birch tree and dodge when he attacks. You can get fine wood that way without tools (ships in black forest or plains are super rare).
In black forest you can also destroy barrels and chair next to stone towers and get some wood like that.

If you are crazy enogh you can try mountain caves (not easy to find and you need a lot of campfires). Not to mention you can find metal there where you destroy stuff.

Trolls can be killed with a lvl 1 crude bow and wood arrows. Kite the troll through woods, which slows it down. I've done it several times. You probably need about 20+ arrows.

Much easier to use fire arrows on a troll though. Easy to get resin from trees and graylings and feathers from birds. Hunting birds for feathers is a good way to get your bow skill up in the process.

If you wanna get fine wood early watch out for shipwrecks at dark forest coasts or stools in front of Tower ruins....

Birch trees which have a very white distinctive bark, and oak trees which have a very thick trunk, can both be chopped down to provide fine wood.

I've gotten fine wood from birch before I can properly cut the trees. By repeatedly rolling a large beech log into a birch tree, it will eventually fall, and then repeating the action the birch log can be broken up.

A fine wood bows not a bad idea but you can do the trick with the crude bow and a lot of arrows. Spears and knives are better for Troll slaying as they do pierce rather than slash damage. Look for the yell damage track this indicates that the target is vulnerable to that type
