Tips for Swamps
Ok, I must be doing something wrong because anytime I try to explore a swamp biome, I'm just bombarded by mobs, which I can mostly handle but then an Abom (or two) will come out and just ruin my whole day. I've tried attacking them with my bow but I'd be kiting around the biome for days (and gathering more mobs in the process, even with fire arrows) and I attempted to melee, but even with my bone shield he was chonking me for half my health.
I dunno, I'm super frustrated with the swamps, they seem impossible so maybe I'm not doing something right. I do have poison resist pots.

Do you use the highest food you can get? Having high hp is important if you wanna parry/block it. You might could just run and find crypts for iron and start fighting everything that bothers you with a gud ol banded shield.. iron axe and sword also cutts these things in half pretty nicely if you learn parry timings.
Fighting mobs in the swamps once you enter them is a waste of time at the very beginning and is quite hard if you get overwhelmed... they will keep coming sooo.. really.. if you aren't feel comfortable there.. ignore everything and rush into crypts.
In crypts you can farm some entrails for nice sausages. That alone will help you immensely.

Try to get on top of a nearby Swamp Dungeon (or high (horizental) Swamp Tree - they are indestructible and try to fight the Abomination from there - they are not able to hit you on (almost all?) of the toparea of the Swamp Dungeon. Use either fire arrows or. as the better solution - hit them with an axe from the top (may seem scary but it should be 100% safe to do). If they run off wait a bit and then jump down to get his attention again and lure him back to the Swamp Dungeon (dont forget to get back on top... :) ).
As an Alternative, try to get the Abomination next/on a Surtling spawner firepit. They burn nicely - but it can be difficult to keep them there.
Another option is to ignore them but as you wrote that can be difficult to do (and depends on what you want to do in the Swamp).

Abom-troubles due to low tier gearr can be solved by jumping up onto "somthing" where it can't hit you and lob firearrows onto it.

Ah ok I haven't even been able to FIND a crypt because of how many mobs come at me, plus there's always at least one abom that comes up...so basically, just run away from them and keep looking for the crypt?

Drag him to a fire spawn spout and tank the hits with a better shield

Thing is, I'm barely getting into the biome before an abom comes up and chases me away. I haven't seen any crypts or fire spouts yet. If I drag an abom anywhere except the path I came in on, I'll aggro all manner of other mobs and I end up retreating (or dying).

Also pay attention to the ground; you can see them before they rise. When I venture into the swamps undergeared, I usually sneak and heed my surroundings, going slow, while looking for that first turnip or whatever.

its better not to enter the biome but stay in the edge of it. first goal is to find a crypt to get 30-40 iron and then go back to base to make the banded shield because bronze buckler is weak if you dont parry. also try to find turnip seeds to upgrade your cauldron to make sausages witch is very good hp food. and always have poison resist and try to avoid fight. and use the hoe to lvl up the ground so you dont step in water. swamp is pretty hard biome untill you get better equipment and get used to navigate in it. arrow fighting can help but running away is better...

At first, yes, it would seem the entire swamp wants to come say hello.
-Just work the periphery until that first wave is defeated. Don't push in too far at first.
-Use blunt weapons; they seem to well against everything.
-Score the ingredients for sausage to upgrade your food selection.
-Use the hoe to raise land out of the puddles where leeches roam. This will help you get out of the swamp faster and safer as you push in further. It also restricts leech mobility and lets you engage them on your own terms. You don't want to be stuck in deep water for long.
-Use torches to help you keep your bearings as you push deeper so you don't get turned around when stressful situations occur.
-Use workstations to suppress enemies from spawning near the paths you make.
-Use fire and slashing weapons against abomination. Drop campfires at its feet. Later, you can lead it over fire geysers to keep it lit.
-Keep your poison resist up always. Don't let it wear off for too long.
-Watch out for those areas where draugrs and skeletons have spawn points. Steer clear of those for now.
As you gain more experience around the edges of a swamp, you'll gain the knowledge and confidence to handle it better. Once you're able to get better weapons, armor, and food that the swamp provides, the challenge the swamp presents will become several orders of difficulty easier.
Just be smart about not lingering too long in the swamp early on. Each time you get in and out alive will better prepare you to stay longer the next time. Enjoy the challenge the game is presenting you that is the swamps. You'll be patting yourself on the back once you master this area.

If you can manage to move fast and ignore the mobs that maybe the way to do it. But be aware that they may stay next/near to a Dungeon entrance when you pulled them there so there may a surprise when you exit the Dungeon. Some more tips:
At first, try to avoid night trips/movement in the Swamp - enemies are more numerous (and tougher?) at night.
Try to get the best food you can (i would go for Deer Stew, Carrot Soup and either some more meat (for more HP) or Honey (for more Stamina) - each of these are quite easy to make in large amounts if you have Carrots and some bee hives (i usually hunt my meat; i do not tend to farm boars...), Also carry extra food with you - you may get trapped in a Dungeon during the night if you dont want to venture in the Swamps as night).
Then you need some good weapons - i would suggest a bronze mace and a bronze buckler (practice parrying - blocking is easy ;) ) and maybe something for mob control like a bronze atgeir or a Stagbreaker (i would go with the Atgeir here). Also have a finewood bow with a plentiful supply of fire arrows (and maybe flint arrows; i dont tend to waste bronze or iron on making arrows). As an alternative, make a tower shield or - better - a Boneshield if you can - those allow you to block stronger attacks but they slow you down considerably (but only if you hold them in your hands).
And you need good armor: either a fully leveled Troll Armor (3rd level is the max you can get by now i guess) or a bronze armor (slows you down).

Ok, cool. I've only just found turnip seeds a day or so ago so they are currently in the process of growing. I DO bring a hoe with and level the ground to make a path and avoid leeches/make it easier to kill them. I am using the bone shield which works great against drauger but no so much the aboms. I'm using my leather set for sneak sneaks but mobs always end up seeing me anyway it seems. I'll try working the outer edges next time. TY for the tips!

I'm already doing most of what everyone has suggested. I have upgraded troll armor, upgraded bone shield, upgraded bronze mace & sword...using poison resist pots, bringing the hoe with, I guess the only thing I'm doing wrong is fighting everything that comes at me versus just running away and looking for the crypt.

The swamps are hard and my least favorite part of the game. It's the only biome where mobs would camp my tombstone after I died. I died numerous times trying to reach my grave in the middle of a watery area. Even the plains have been a walk in the park compared to the swamps. To top it off, my seed had no crypts. I spent over 50 hours searching the little bit of swamps I had, and countless hours of black forests and I found 2 crypts in 50+ hours. I had to jump seeds for iron, I was sick of it. I am at over 160 hours now on my original seed, and only found 4 more crypts, so 6 crypts found on this seed in over 160 hours of playtime. My "iron" seed had 6 crypts a 10 minute walk from spawn.. lol Regardless, the swamps are nasty. Even at max gear, I try and avoid them lol Then iron comes back later on in the game.. Yay! ugh lol Go in slow, like very slow. Eat your best food and poison resist mead. Go in during the day, run out before dark. Bring a hoe to level paths across to avoid leaches, and again.... Go slow. Sneak is your friend. The abominations CAN be avoided as they surface before they see you (in most cases). The mobs are relentless here and tough but the swamps are the heart of the game. You cannot avoid this biome unfortunately. The game actually gets easier after the swamps. Oh, and if you see a 2 star Draugr.. Run!! lol

Then it is either fast running around or slowly and methodically scout out a small area and then try to eliminate all enemies in that area before moving on. The Swamps can be hard at first - you need to find your way to survive in them.
Another option would be to go to another Swamp area - some Swamps are "not good" to start in - i did that myself a few times as it is a better option than dying/failing all the time.
Also be aware of the fact that narrow strips of Swamp (mostly found as going from the north to the south) may not have Dungeons at all.

Lot of great advise, but it seems a two star drauger archer one shots me or at least 90% every time. And they never miss.
