It's time to vote! Is Valheim your Game of the Year?
Valheim gets two thumbs up from me. It trumps any game I've played this year, and I've logged a lot of hours in some pretty darn good ones. Considering it is an Early Access release, the team at Iron Gate has done a hecuva job.
I'm procrastinating killing the final boss, exploring newfoundland, liberating and restoring Draugr and Fugling villages, along with the odd ghost town. My latest is a little dacha in the swamp. With beachfront! At the speed things are rolling out, there will be a new boss added, and soloing Yagluth will be a historical footnote in my epic Viking saga of accomplishments. When I think of all the songs that will be sung, I get a little tingle down my spine. I imagine sorta like the team at Iron Gate must feel, for being nominated to the final voting for Game of the Year!

Meh, not really. Id probably vote Everhood or Deep Rock Galactic on that one.
Valheim gives me bittersweet memories of being backstabbed by friends and broken by bugs. The world is beautiful but the machinery of the game needs more polishing and work before Id think about voting for it.
I have over 1200 hours into Valheim and have yet to encounter a bug. I play with KB & mouse and the game machinery and movement is par excellence imo. My friends are my relatives and they both fear and love me ...
Don't forget to vote Valheimenwizers, we can make this happen.

Yeah, in a lot of ways it is, Valheim was a literal lifesaver in early lockdown... But it doesn't have a release year yet. Isn't game of the year supposed to be things that came out more-or-less in that year? When it's finished maybe. All depends on what they deliver. EA games shouldn't even be in the running.

Im glad you had such a flawless experience with people of your blood who love you. I am grateful you are so blessed to have a playthrough like that. It does not however, discount the experience I had; I have over 1200 hours into Valheim and have yet to encounter a bug. I play with KB & mouse and the game machinery and movement is par excellence imo. My friends are my relatives and they both fear and love me ...
Where people went on without me because I was slow, the world was eaten by the World Eater at some point, and attempts to restart created a laggy broken network framehell created by the games machinery while my laptop ran like it was going to catch on fire. My nice, new laptop which I had spent two years saving for.
Part of the poor experience is my fault, of course. But Id be amiss if I did not speak of the games penchant to run my card at max power all the time. And it does worry me.

500 hours in, but this team is ruining the game so no way. Not on my life would I give them an award.

I voted Best With Friends, but not GOTY. The game isn't out of Early Access. I will consider Valheim for GOTY when it's out of Early Access, and how much of their original road map was implemented.
For example, I was an early adopter of Cubeworld, years before it was released on Steam. Look how that turned out? Totally different from what it was promised. So while I do like Valheim immensely, it doesn't deserve the GOTY badge just yet.

I would agree with that sentiment, but then that would mean that anyone who spends most of the year playing a fantastic EA game would effectively be unable to participate in the game awards. When it's finished maybe. All depends on what they deliver. EA games shouldn't even be in the running.

Then perhaps Steam should create another award specifically for Early Access games.

Any game that I play for over 930 hours in way less than a year (I got the game in mid-April) deserves that title. :D
Numbers aside, the previously latest game I'd gotten as much into as I have Valheim was a 2015 release, and in all of my gaming years only very few games have ever been this amazing and seemingly infinitely replayable. Playing with friends is an additional plus that none of my other favourite games has because I don't like multiplayer games.
All that even though the game is not even finished yet!
So yeah, the easiest GOTY choice ever.
A tough category to win, no doubt, but there is definitely a chance.
