Annoying Connected Portal Effects

You know, those flames and that whine which occur whenever a viking gets within atwo meters of the side of a connected portal bearing the magic runes. If said viking is trying to access a nearby workstation, chest, or door, ot simply passing by here come the flames and the noise. Like someone dragging their fingernails across a chalkboard. What to do?

A. Put up with it. (I'm a cranky old man, so this "solution" is a non-starter.}

B. Post a suggestion that Iron Gate Studio tone down the effects. (I cannot quite picture a
Swedish programmer saying "I've annoyed a cranky old man! Let me drop the bug-squashing and completing the game and modify those effects right away!)

C. Figure out how to deal with it on my own.

Note the viking is standing very close to the back of a connected portal. Note the absence of flames. Trust me, there is no connected portal noise either. But all is not peaches and cream.

A viking can enter a connected portal from wither the front or the back. A viking always emerges from a connected portal on the front side. Originally, I positioned the front of the portal very close to the wood wall. Entering the portal from the back and emerging at the portal on the other end worked like a charm. Upon reversing course, I found myself emerging on the other side of the wood wall. I moved the portal far enough away from the wood wall that I could emerge on the same side of the wall as the portal. A viking must also ensure there is sufficient space to walk around one or both ends of the connected portal.

I suspect that positioning the front of a connected portal very close to a wood wall that has a boulder, tree, or sheer drop on the other side, or close to a much thicker stone wall might have catastrophic effects. I am not brave enough to find out by trial and error.

This technique works well for me as a cranky old man. If I were an extremely cranky old man, I might find the extra steps required to get around the portal annoying.

I flip it backwards and leave the needed space between it and a wall. That way it never comes on. Thats in the really treacherous places, tho. At the fort they are just around but none 'inside' or nearby. As I too do not enjoy hitting that activate zone. But when they must be near, flipped. Or you can try a slip hole, since you do not need to strike the 'hoop' in the center being parallel with it, you can simply fall onto a ring and activate it. As it has been documented in this very forums, in a thread I commented into. Seeking exactly those details. Fully documented. Boxing it likely would help alot. If you double wall it, or use block in concert, you may stifle it completely.
Mainly I only get irritated with it when I know I need to hear things.

Location, location, location applies to more than real estate.

The gate effect lags me down like Hell. Thats why one puts them away from working areas. At small outposts just have one piece of ore in your pockets to disable any gates?

The portal cabinet helps but is not totally effective.

In my original post, I said I was annoyed by both the visual effects and sound effects emitted by a portal when approaching within two meters of the rune side of the portal. The idea of building a cabinet with was advanced by Hamther and sounded great. Alas, in practice it turns out to be good but not great.

The first screenshot above shows a portal cabinet with one of its doors open. The flame effect is somewhat reduced. One may note that there are also sparkling particles which originate behind the viking and move into the connected portal. These are not reduced and neither are the sound effects.

The second screenshot above shows the same portal cabinet with both doors closed. The flame effect is completely hidden. The sparkling particles and the sound effects are not effected.

One may also note that the portal is placed against the exterior wall. There is at least a meter of the 2 by 2 meter floor tile unoccupied by the connected portal. The two doors are built on the near edge of a second 2 by 2 meter floor tile abutting the first. The viking is standing on a third 2 by 2 meter floor tile abutting the second at least a meter from the doors. The trigger range for connected portal visual and sound effects must be considerably greater than two meters.

Will I tear down the portal cabinet and reposition the portal so that it faces the exterior wall? I suppose I will at some point when my cranky old man becomes sufficiently annoyed to force my lazy old man to do so.

I had not thought of that. Just what a viking needs for a single portal in a cramped building.

I cannot say I'm thrilled about the amount of materials needed to build such a cupboard. Since the distance at which the effects are triggered is greatest from the front of the portal, I'm wondering if I can dispense with the walls and just use single or double doors.

As yet another cranky old man I have to agree with the OP. It isn't usually a problem for me these days as I mostly do no-portals runs but my latest run I've gone back to pure vanilla no house rules and ran into it again.

I try to mitigate it by placing portals in out of the way places when possible and by using only two portals at my home base - one always left unconnected for emergencies and fixing fouliups in renaming portals, the other I rename to whatever destination. It works but requires using the same names on the map as for the portals and/or putting up charcoal signs lest I become confused or am playing after being woken up by the neighbor at 2 AM and before first cup of coffee.

The other side of the portal usage can get you caught in a loop which is hard to get out of. Had it happen when I placed a portal wrong at a burial chamber entrance. I was able to break out by hammering on a movement key, otherwise the only ways I can think of are using console commands or logging to another world and obtaining a piece of ore.

Valheim is a good game, but it's not perfect. This is just one of the many visual effects that annoy me about the game. Another bad one is sun glare in the Mountains. Blizzard effects are so annoying, I go into the console and turn them off whenever they occur.

I agree with op. The portal-ready effect is cool, but it should simmer down after a second or so.

Keep a piece of metal in a box where your portals are, and carry it when you want to work around them. Put an extra character after the link name for any portals that are rarely used.

A lone portal will not be attacked unless it is close enough for aoe or in swing radius.

Just put them away from everything else.
Also check volume settings and see what one that may be and if you can turn it down happily.

Personally I like background stuff loud but it might be an effect volume or something.

can build them farther away, in a lower traffic area/building.
could carry around some metal, they won't activate then.
can do a "no portal" challenge.
