Wild animals attack instead of running

Is this happening because the AI is severly stupid or because I messed up with some wildlife mods? Most animals like deer and hares (those are especially stupid because they can't even attack) run towards me once startled, try to attack me and then run away just to return a few moments later and trying to attack me again.

Exactly. So it's a known issue for the mod it you can instantly identify it.

How does a creature without an attack "try to do damage"?

The creature is just dumb and runs back up to you in a panic. It's that simple.

A specific mod that added a ton of wildlife was at fault. For some reason all of the added animals that I came across had a "fight then flight" response in which they noticed me (red exclamation mark) and tried to move towards me. If I ran away they would follow me until they reached my position, attack and then run away until they would home in on me again. At least if they were still in aggro range.

Even animals with no attacks did that. The hares from that mod would just jump at me without doing any damage. That's what I explained as trying to do damage. Poor litle ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ had to do SOMETHING after all.

Mod deleted, no more odd behaviour, still playing the game modded because I won't touch vanilla, everyone is happy. Except the rabbits. They're dead. forever.

Then no; that is not vanilla. That would be a mod thing.

She literally said in the original post that she used mods. The question I have is why do people start a game and use mods immediately like she stated? You're just asking for trouble in my opinion. But I guess this is a classic case of you do you.

This is vanilla behavior. Try not blaming everything on mods.

Well I never played this game without mods as I just started and in my experience it's amazing how often the vanilla experience pales absolutely in comparison to the modded experience hence why I didn't bother to even try the game without mods.

That's why I'm asking here. Thank you for your answer, I guess I'll deep dive and check what mods are messing with the behaviour.

Well that relatizes everything I just wrote. Damn.

The AI can get very stupid with deer and hares, with or without mods. This is especially true if you have a "Sneak" bonus. Often times, when I'm just running through a black forest, a deer with get "startled" when I get close, and because of how quickly I'm moving, it starts moving one way, stops, moves another way, and gets all confused.

I tend not to wear Troll in mistlands for obvious reasons, but I've seen Hare behave just as oddly, and they seem to love to run into Dvergr-placed spikes.

Best thing for you to do is to see for yourself; try both with mods and without mods, and judge for yourself what difference you see, if any.

[EDIT] If you use a mod manager (particularly the r2modman manager or Thunderstore Mod Manger), try the "start vanilla" option.
