It's actually closer to 6 million after Steam's 30%. However, the amount they made is actually beside the point.
You bought the game for $18 to $25, knowing it was in Early Access, on the notion that 2 indie developers will do their thing, regardless of the amount they made, that it might take anywhere from 3 years to forever. The amount of money they made is irrelevant, because it has nothing to do with you. In other words, you buying a loaf of bread for $3 doesn't have authority over Dempster's Bakery on how they choose to run their multi million dollar business.
If you think supporting Early Access isn't a risk, but rather, you being in a position of authority to dictate what the developers should or should not do, then you're naive at best. Don't like the pace the developers are outputting updates? Then perhaps take this as a learning tool that IronGate and Early Access development isn't for you. In the future, don't buy Early Access.
Personally, I'm 90% fine with the way things has progressed. All 9 of my players are fine with the game's development. A lot of people are fine as well. I am not saying your opinion doesn't count. I am saying your opinion that they owe you something because they made $8 ($6 m) million doesn't give you authority over their development process. That is all.

U already have 150 plus hours in. You got your monies worth. Not bad for an ea game. I have bought sooo many AAA tittles for 70 bux+ played for 5 hours and bet the game and never touched again.
Get a life, the fact that you even went through the trouble to figure out how much they made tells me you need another hobby.
What does that have to do with the price if rice cakes in China?
How much the game has made has very little to do with development. You think the answer is to just hire 20 more devs and pump out crap? Lastly, it takes years to develop a game. 4-5 is the average. We done 1 so far. That means we are still a few years away before we see the end. so buckle up butter cup and enjoy the ride.

The comments so far resonate with my feelings on this, and I'll add:
I consider games to be art (some more than others, but hey, that's other art, too), and Valheim feels like an expression of Iron Gate's aesthetic, values, dreams, and what it is to have fun. Perhaps Iron Gate was surprised that their game became so popular, and maybe that was an overwhelming feeling? Now with so many eyes turned their way, maybe they're feeling too much judgement creeping in and corrupting/interrupting their artistic flow. I don't know them, I'm just trying to imagine their situation. I doubt they just want to cash out, as this seems like a labor of love in the works for the last four years (if not in sketchbooks well before that, bubbling up into consciousness). Check out The Blindboy Podcast for more thoughts on art and the impact of judgement.
My overall feeling about the efforts of Iron Gate is gratitude for making and sharing it in the first place. In my 45 hours so far I've had enough lasting fun for the money I paid that I'd be okay if I couldn't play it again, AND I'm really looking forward to exploring it more.

Content should be expected. This is not art, it is a transaction based on the premise it will be worked on further as the Developer themselves stated. Steam is a store, not a gallery.
As to moneys worth that is also irrelevant. In it's current stage it has only basics to offer game play wise and just because someone notices the lack of updates as per the Developers own postings in no way indicates their lack of "life".
Hopefully they release a decent update soon as so far their offerings have been lacklustre at best.

Do these people not own more than one game? If you're bored of this game, put it down and play something else. Come back and check on this one in a year or two.

Only gamers....
I bought this movie ticket, but I only got to see one movie. I clearly deserve more content for my ticket.
I bought this book and I finished reading it. When can I expect more content?
Yea, I bought a new bike, when does it get an update?
You people man...are ruining gaming...
Because you create a demand that corporations are more than willing to fill.

Thank Valve that Steam has banned NFT games.

not all of us are satisfied with 'subverted expectations'. Daily troll...yawns
its obvious the game is more hyped up than its worth, just by looking at the steam charts;
peak players was @ launch, over 400k when people were like "wow! new, less ugly minecraft!'
average player count is between 25-40k players, and only ever went back above 100k when they released hearth and home.
But by all means keep apologizing for the developers, instead of raising your standards on how often content should be released for a multi million dollar-earning title, indie or not.
hours put into a game are irrelevant, especially so when the game is in EARLY ACCESS when content, meta, and entire gameplay elements are subject to change... this isn't my first rodeo, kids.
God forbid I expect the developers to pump out content more often than twice a year on a EA title.

Yes. Steam is a Gaming site. Everything else is irrelevant to the discussion... Movies, books and bikes are sold as complete units. That is the nature of the medium.
As to the "you people" comment and the waffle about Corporations and NFT's I can assume you have nothing to add other than derision.

Do you want a Rushed Game that has a million Bugs like any Sonic Game after Adventures.
Or do you want a game that is taken care of and worked on and made to be Game of the year. if not longer.

one 'meaningful' content update since steam launch in march of '21 does not instill confidence.
