If you get bbq'd you're choosing the wrong approach like the wrong gear.
Use fire resistance potion and / or the correct armor, like the fenrin one.

Thought yag would be a great boss for crossbow training, dug a trench around alter. Yag can't leave alter. Set up a rest hut away from him and he just sits their taking whatever I desire to train. I can even throw some spells at him If I get bored of crossbowing. I wouldn't recommend cheesing him this way as it presents no challenge and learning opportunities on how to engage enemies and use tactics

I am preparing his altar now for when I summon him in my solo play through. I have raised palisades using earthen works so they can't be destroyed, and thankfully the altar is right next to the sea. So I made a trench in the water to keep me wet when attacking so it puts the flames out.

I have a portal under a rock that links back to my home base, just in case I die. Currently I am eyeing up the Lox near his altar which I am going to tame and bring to the fight. Also I need to breed them for meat.

Got a fully upgraded Frostner, padded armour and fire brandy. I find preparation is key to defeating the bosses in this game after Eykthir. Arrange the battlefield to suit your play style and tactics.

As soon as I find the altar I am going to take on Yag for the first time . I also have yhe t4 Frostner and Padded. Ty for these tips was gonna ask but you seem to have nailed it for me.

Just beat Yagluth a few days ago on my 2nd playthrough and I recommend against padded armor. makes you too slow.
My setup is ~:
1. Stamina, Health & Fire Resist potions.
2. high tier food (I think it was serpent stew, blood pudding and wolf skewer?)
3. Fenris armor for speed + Fenris hood for fire resistance OR padded helmet for higher armor level without speed drain.
4. Frostner + Silver sword (I think)

1+2 allowed me to regularly use the potions and stay aboe 100hp most of the time while tanking most fire damage "just like that."

And of course don't forget to clear the area beforehand.
Fight was no problem - even forgot to activate Bonemass's forsaken power (again) - but, to be fair, my character didn't start over so my stats are verrrrrry high (a few @100, most others between 50 and 70-80).

I just finished preparing the Yag alter. I generally just build earthen walls connecting the fingers to keep him contained with small gaps to use for escape when the meteors are coming. The water table is pretty high, so I might be able to do the water thing, but I'm not sure I like the idea.

This time I also built a hidey hole under the edge of the alter and tamed a couple of lox that were nearby while I was working. One of them wandered into the alter circle on it's own. The other one I had to use a few deathsquitos to lure him in, since I haven't made a saddle.

I found a deathsquito and let it sting me while I passed near the lox on the way to to the alter. It's a real balancing act trying to agro the lox on the deathsquito while keeping the deathsquito agroed on me, while making progress toward the alter, all while being strung.

The lox don't seem to want to breed, but I don't want to wait around for it anyways. They're just a bit of a bonus. I've never tried using lox, so I'm curious how well they do.

I my case he just seemed to lose interest in me at certain distances. So......... I just shot a zillion arrows into his face while he simply scowled.

Harpoon is very useful, so, it makes sense they stopped that... B U T ...RAISED GROUND you can put near any boss area ... and, make walls, tunnels, shields... also, bring a few LOX that are tame ... hehe ... both of those work way too good.

Fire resist potion. Avoid meteors, get a tan in the fire aoe while you do free damage.

I've literally never fired a single arrow at Yaggy. Waste of time.

Yeah, takes less than five minutes to fail at dodging meteors. Either you're coordinated enough to dodge those things before they stun lock you or you're not. I freely admit that I am not.

I plan to tame 2* wolves this round. Considering how much time and trouble that is to do, I don't think you can call it cheese. You're just pre-loading the difficulty somewhere else. (Lox don't work as well, I tried that last time. But they did get him down enough that I could finish the job with the silver sword.)

In answer to op. Yes they patched out all bosses being able to be harpooned some time ago.
