8 is enough to get started... The kiln & smelter each require 5, but you aren't required to have both at the same time. Make a bunch of charcoal, then smash the kiln (you get everything back) and make a smelter. That will get you started with bronze while you keep up the search for more cores.

Have you cut down a pine tree to get core wood? Upgrading the workstations doesnt unlock new recipes, just allows you to upgrade items further

If I remember you need to craft some nails.

You can't destroy the stones blocking passages, so don't waste time trying.

You are just experiencing the wonders of randomly generated burial chambers. I've had chambers that have yielded one or two cores; I've had others that have given me 15. Just find more and explore...

Where to find Surtling core. Surtling cores can be found inside Burial Chambers in the Black Forest in Valheim. These Burial Chambers are dotted all over the place and, as the name suggests, are heavily defended by skeletons.

It should be in the same menu as the crafting station.
it uses copper so you need to mine and refine it into bars to get the option to build it.

I assume you have picked up rock wood and coal as well.

Stone, coal , wood, copper, Equip the hammer?

Did you smelt the ore down using the smelter?

In addition to the requirements listed by GunsForBucks and Ryzilynt, you must be within the build radius of a workbench.

you would think we could find plans in treasure chests on how to build upgrades and weapons and gear, like once you found the plans it would be grayed out till you have the materials to make em..
