Opting out of forced updates?
Why can't there be an option to set a fixed game version for yourself to play on?
I know about the spammed everywhere beta opt-in solution, but it didn't work for me, i've been using it since the patch before but it still forced me to update today and i can not play now. I know it was possible, at least in Mount and Blade Bannerlord, i had a gameversion that the mods supported and i was happy to play the version i wanted. And now a minor patch that fixes left handed mouse support or something forcibly renders my game unplayable.

Ahha! Nice. I've always wanted to check if Steam has anything to say about that. Good thing to know that actually works. The problem with the beta opt-in solution is that default_old also gets updated. What is working for me is to save a copy of the game to a location outside of steams game folders, and then run the game from that location. I haven't noticed any problems doing this. I don't know if works with MP though. And you don't get the steam overlay (unless you add it as a non-steam game) but I don't really care about that.

Hope they fix it soon, now that we updated it, I think there's nothing we can do about it
OKay maybe this helps others, i reinstalled the game, every single mod and the mod manager, rebooted my pc, opted out of that default_old beta thing and now it works.

I too have Bepinx but my mod manager is Thunderstore. Did you try to opt out of old beta and onto the main version?
Before finding the solution the game didn't launch from thunderstore even with all mods disabled including bepinx

you could just copy the whole valheim game folder to another location. that copy won't update.
Yeah, i guess that's what i'll do first when i get my save to work
There's another option instead of duplicating VH's game folder:
- Disable auto-update for VH in steam ("Only update this game when I launch it").
- Set your preferred "beta" version and run it once.
- Add VH as a "non-Steam game".
- Name it differently (eg. "Valheim - NoSteamUpdate"), fav it and unfav the original VH in Steams game library.
- Bonus: It gets a different logo because Steam doesn't use the one inside valheim.exe
Even SteamOverlay should remain working but It kinda doesn't on my end. I get the popup "press ctrl+tab to open steam overlay" and the FPS counter is there too but actually pressing ctrl+tab does nothing.
But SteamFriends will still show you playing VH - dunno if joining a game through friends or broadcasting will work or not...

Modding EA games is a good use of time. Every forum for every EA game I play says nothing but nice things about the experience. Not sure why Valheim is so problematic.
Haw.

You rendered your game unplayable by modifying it though. It works fine unmodified.

No problem. Yes I do hope someone would check me if I was lying about a problem of my own creation and offered a solution I could not see.

But seriously though, your argument is wrong, my game worked just fine with mods, i even thought i opted out of updates by using the opt-in beta default_old feature. And my game got rendered unplayable by steam or defelopers deciding "lol screw you Fecici, you are gonna play the version we churned out, not the one you want and had"
