Valheim: Worth a go for someone who doesn't care about survival games?

Title. I know this game is good and highly beloved, but no amount of watching reviews and letsplays can answer the question of if I personally will enjoy it. I've not played much in the way of survival games in the past, besides a bit of Minecraft and Satisfactory, and even then I spend way more time watching than playing. I've played a decent amount of Terraria though; its assortment of RPG mechanics, in-depth combat, and multiple classes and specialized gear seems to motivate me.

So, for people who didn't enjoy survival games prior to Valheim, what motivated you to stick with this one? And is there a specific mindset I should have going into the game, either for Valheim in particular or survival games in general?

I really didn't like the whole survival genre's effect on games in general and avoided them like the plague. Two have only kept me interested. This one because atmosphere, the amazing boss fights, the way there is an actual game with good pacing in levels/biomes to progress (it's not just random building, there is a point to everything and you can't just waltz into the new biomes you have to earn it) and general detail on the weapons are something else already too that all work together to make a great game obviously produced with attention to detail and SOVL. With Legends Mod plus the vanilla weapons (which blows skyrim out of the water) you now have excellent ARPG classes rivaling dragon's dogma in depth and complexity on top of the world to build in. In a full co-op game. The other survival game is 7 days to die because it also has RPG mechanics and a serious focus on deadly tower defense vs. zombies and a good horror atmosphere.

I don't know Tribes of Midgard but I did play Northgard and this game is completely different.
I love this game with friends but if you don't have access to friends or a private server to play on the solo play can become tedious and frustrating (though it is doable)
I cannot stress enough that this is very easy on the survival side (as someone else mentioned) you don't NEED to eat or sleep to stay alive but you do need to eat to fight anything bigger then a boar.
I would really recommend this game even if it wasn't onsale as something you should have in your library to support the devs.
I hope you play and enjoy the game!

The game is the best $20 I've spent on a game, 750 hours in now and still enjoying it. Be warned 'time will fly' playing this game, which is always a sure sign of just how good a game really is and this game "rocks".

I really don't consider it a "survival" game.
As stated by Psymon, you can't starve to death - eating (a variety of) food just builds your HP and Stamina.
Getting your @$$ handed to you and dying, as you explore the map and gather the resources you need to craft items to upgrade your weapons and armor, is how you learn what to do and when it is smart to do something and when it is smart not to do something (like traveling through the Plains at night).

There is what some would refer to as "repetitive" work (mining, gathering resources, farming and cooking), but that is all part of the game. But as you take part in these activities, it is the random things that can happen to you that makes it so fun (like heading home from mining copper only to run into a Troll, and as you are fighting him off, have 5 or 6 Greydwarves and friends start chasing you, and as you move away while taking them on as well, have a Boar start in on you ... then run by a Neck, who, of course can't leave you alone either).

Valhiem wasn't really a game I would have considered "my type of game" when I bought it for $19.99, but today I consider it the BEST money I ever spent.

I would recommend this game to anyone, all the while knowing that the game isn't for everyone.

It's the adventures you can do with friends for me. When my friends and I first started playing sea shanty's where trending at the time and we had a blast building a raft sailing out into the ocean listening to wellerman and other songs while singing into the mics and then going to new lands scrambling to get a footing at the edge of it so we can survive the night and having different kinds of bases. We had a wicked base with a boat launch resource bases near water and more dangerous areas so we can get them back to our base and just randomly exploring crips with your friends then running for your life while you accidentally wander into a area your not prepared for or finding yourself wildly out number at night. Its a game I personally only play when friends are online because personally I like random adventures but some of my friends prefer staying at the base and building and grinding out resources and taking what he bring back and making stuff for us good for both types of players

I might be risking starting a flamewar here (I don't know how the Valheim community views it), but what about Tribes of Midgard? I know it's not rated as highly, but it might be more my style as someone who likes roguelikes. Are those two games comparable?

/Morpheus voice Unfortunately I cannot tell you if you will enjoy this game.

What I CAN tell you is that if you purchase this game you will have 2 hours to play it and if you DO NOT enjoy you are free to initiate a refund.

Hope this helps.

Alright, I'll give it a go and if I don't like it, I'll refund it and get Tribes of Midgard instead. We'll see if either of them can displace Northgard as my favorite viking game.

worked well for me
there's very little "survival" elements, so it's chill to play without worrying about that stuff.

you can't starve to death
not sleeping won't cause problems
resources are plentiful

This game is just simple, yet incredibly addictive. Once you get your footing, start building a base, learn what danger really is... It's so hard to put down.
