Will this safely hatch a chicken egg?

My kids bought a chicken egg and placed it near a fire. The chicken hatched and then died. They bought a second egg and placed a wall around the fire, but the same thing happened.

I heard that a brazier can be used to keep the egg warm without having to worry about harming the chicken. So I made a 2 x 3 chicken coop with a chimney and brazier behind a metal bars and a door to keep the chicken back.

Here are a couple screenshots. The first one shows the area where the egg would be placed, and the second shows the height of the brazier.

Should this setup be safe?

I built a large chicken coop, with a large fire pit for warmth.

What happens is once you have a bunch of chickens, they wander the border of the pen & end up "piling up" in the corners. For some reason, I end up with two of the four corners piled solid with chickens. They eventually form a type of pyramid, and were climbing up & out over two levels of 2x1 stone at each corner. I ended up needing to put a roof over it.

Their wandering AI could use some dev tuning.

It ended up working. I extended the length of the coop so they have more room, and removed the bars because they kept getting behind them somehow, but they weren't getting killed so I guess they weren't necessary.

We have a lot of chickens now.

I also had chicks hopping over the half size wall sections and had to roof in the structure to keep them inside...I got my cold pen for eggs w/4 hens and my warm pen for meat, which is chock full o' chicken for the lickin'....as it were.

I have often wondered how exactly the first tamed chickens came about. The wild ones are fairly mean and will mess you up (ever tangled with one? they have lots of nasty sharp things). I can see sorta kinda robbing a nest for eggs or clobbering one, but raising one from egg or capturing an adult seems like way too much work unless you are literally starving to death.

Yeah the young chickens will run and jump all over the place, less so when they turn into hens. As long as the heat source is elevated higher than they can jump you will be fine. The eggs don't have to be that close, as long as your character has the status buff from the fire that is close enough. Might take a second for the egg to show that it is warm.

The chicks do be braindead. Keep the fire elevated or isolated and its fine

block your fire source with the crappy pole fence. mobs cant get through, heat can.

also, make sure you fence high, as multiple hatching chicks will stand on top of each other and boost over the fence.

It should work! If you interact with the egg after like 10 seconds and it says "warm", then you should be good. Although, I recommend having an area to just jump into the coop, as opening the door might let some chickens out.
