had something similar. I died to a troll because of sillyness, after picking up my portal far away from home.
I took my second best gear and tried to recover the corpse to build the portal. I sneaked to the corpse while the troll was looking in a different direction. But I couldn't pick up everything, because too much stuff ... then the troll discovered me and i managed to die again. §"$%/&R%%&/$
Third time, i sneaked the whole way without weapons and slowly recovered my portal from the corpses, then recovered the my weapons and brought my stuff home. Then with my good gear i finally killed the troll.
Lesson learnt: Don't pick up a portal and start a fight afterwards.

I have a real hard time with this part of the game. The learning curve is brutal. With that said, there are a few things you can do to overcome them.

1) Corpse Runs - Post on the LFG thread and it doesn't take too long to get help, but don't wait until you die several times, because some of the marked corpses disappear from map and a week later you accidentally stumble on it.

NOTE: When asking for a player to help, make sure you disable all mods as nobody can enter your server unless you each have same mods or are totally vanilla.

2) Trashed bases from greydorf raids can be protected by surrounding them with a wall or spike traps. If you are behind a wall and they try to destroy it, you can repair faster than the raid can destroy it.

The key to this game is to prepare and plan for any push forward. Use lots of mini bases as you travel so you never have far to go to get into an enclosure for protection. If they cannot see you, they will lose interest and leave you alone.

I can help you retrieve that if you want, I can beat Troll and escort you safely.

I had a similar problem with the Elder. Used my re-spawned Viking to attract his attention. Led him a few dozen meters away from my corpse then just outdistanced him and circled back to my corpse. The Elder and trolls are both relatively slow-moving so you will get a few minutes to reclaim your stuff. If there are greydwarves, shamans, brutes, or skeletons in the area, dispose of them before engaging the troll.

Yeah, absolutely. I had not considered what would happen if I got my base destroyed, for example. I'm going to set up backup outposts just in case.

Have had this happen. Took nearly forever, but finally got there. Kited the troll off to follow and circled around. Helps to have a high run skill.

I made the mistake to try to escape a troll by going for a swim and not only he didn't give a crap about the water, he just stays there, taunting me. Moreover, I've died 7 times trying to get to this spot because I have to cross the Black Forest to get there.

There are hours of grinding on that corpse. How can I work around this?

Otherwise, lure the troll away from your corpse and hide from him behind a tree or a rock until he loses the aggro on you. And then sneak to your corpse.
Running straight to the body is never a good idea, no matter where you died.

If you at the end of your rope devcommands are a way out. 'Ghost' will not let troll see you. Use it, grab your stuff, get away, turn it off, get on with the game.
