Signs work perfectly, just leave room for them. After you play for a while (if you organize your loot) you'll have memorized which chest holds what items.

Sometimes there isn't room. The chests could have the option to name them and instead of saying chest when looking at it, it says the name you give it. Like in Terraria. Just a simple QoL improvement i think.
