Who else?
Who else would love it if there were real tunneling in this game so that you could get your Dwarfhold on? I certainly would. I'd make Moria look like a dive.

Works fine in other games with digging. The ground is always destructable in those games though, meaning if something bad finds you down there and there's not a set path - it makes one.
But yeah since this game is tiles, it won't happen. Or it would happen really strangely like how it works in Wurm at best. Though that'd be better than nothing.

Tunneling would be bad. People already exploit terrain changes to easily negate most raids.
Not if they made the "underworld" biome. Imagine sitting in your mine/home all peaceful and a purple worm or balrog comes visiting.

Gotta make bigger dangers bottomside It'd be pretty cool. Apparently the devs have stated they don't want players to be able to completely circumvent the dangers of topside.

I was thinking the same thing as I wrote that. But ultimately it's a lot of work that isn't currently planned, maybe in the end as different approaches to game play are more thoroughly fleshed out.
As it stands now you can get close by digging out under the elder spawn and creating a base down there. You can also create a decent base under most copper nodes. No tunnels connecting them to other bases sadly.
Hell you can even build a massive base and then dig out a basement for a portal dungeon. I was hesitant I admit, but my mates were not. Low and behold it all worked out in the end.

People do it in real life as well. Wouldn't call berms and moats an "exploit". Tunneling would be bad. People already exploit terrain changes to easily negate most raids.

I have thought about it and it would fundamentally change this game. Some people have already mentioned some of what would be needed. New enemies? Does day and night cycle matter underground? it would be pretty lame if there was nothing underground, so that would mean a whole new biome (and all the work that would have to go through to make it). They would also have to re-design how water works in underground (currently it wouldn't be good.
It is a cool idea but it would not work in Valheim

Itβs not just that; they made a choice on how the world is generated and that choice limits how land is terraformed. Tunnelling is one thing thatβs just not viable with that choice; would essentially be a full land/ world rewrite. It'd be pretty cool. Apparently the devs have stated they don't want players to be able to completely circumvent the dangers of topside.
You can create tunnels in a fashion though my tunnelling under troll cave entrances or huge rocks.

As much as I would absolutely be thrilled by this, the game isn't built that way, and I have come to terms with the fact that I will not be able to dig my home.

I know it'd take a huge arse code overhaul and won't happen. But I'd still love it if it ever did :) As for circumventing the dangers -- people sadly do that with moats and dirtwalls already sometimes. I wish large monsters could break dirt <3
