Are the trees meant to be more lethal than the enemies?

I cut trees down, and suddenly the entire forest collapses and takes me with it. Is this normal?

If you haven't been killed by falling trees you haven't truly played the game.

Once you get into troll armor and black forest foods you'll never fear a tree again.. they are only dangerous until you get to BF. It is crazy though.. definitely have to be cautious lol.

you should be gracefull that you could take down allot of trees and avoid having to spend the time and energy cutting down each of them ;-)
PS. if you cut the trees a few times so they do not fall, then you can use the trees as defence against the enemys that attack your base now and then.. Just run over the tree while in combat and hit it 1 time and it will make other trees fall and roll down a hill or similar.. ;-)

"The forest is moving"

But yeah as ling.speed said, wearing armor helps so it gets less dangerous later on.

welcome to the wonders of valheim

yeah, the first time i was "greeted" by the first enemy of the game i was surprised
its normal to get smashed by falling trees at the beginning - nobody expected the trees to be dangerous

dont you worry, mass collapses of trees happen often
they tend to damage surrounding trees on contact which can cause chain reactions
often players use this for getting wood on mass with little effort

Lol welcome to Valheim.

Here's a few tips when felling trees.

1: A tree on relatively flat land, when felled will generally fall in the direction you (Your character, NOT THE CAMERA) are facing.

2: Survey the tree, note everything around it. Is the ground flat or angled (this can cause the tree to tumble in an undesired direction); Is the tree touching another tree. Think of the tree as you would a Domino-piece, will it fall into another tree and cause a cascading effect?

3: Bring wood. Build a crafting table and then build Vertical Wooden Poles (two high) on the sides of the trees in the direction you DO NOT want the tree to fall towards. Ex: On a slanted hill slanting North, you want the tree to fall Northwards, so you then build Vertical Poles on the South to catch the Timbers and prevent them from rolling. The poles do not need to be exactly next to the tree being felled, they may be placed 4-8m away from the tree in staggered rows.

4: A Timber that is falling can have its direction manipulated if you Jump-Punch the tree (Punching from the ground can work too but has less manipulating effects). As long as you're character hits the top portion of the timber (The top being towards the sky) then falling damage from the timber is negated because you are not underneath the tree.

Good luck!

ROFL, I love how you worded it.

Yes, it is normal for you to take damage if you get hit by falling trees. It is also normal for them to damage other trees (and potentially take them down) if they fall into other trees.

The key is to not get hit by the falling trees. Also, make sure you have eaten before logging, so that you have enough health that, should you fail at not-getting-hit, you do not die.

Right. I cut down one tree and it took 10 with it, I had eaten and it just wiped me out.

Glad to know I'm meant to be taken out in that situation

At least you've already mastered the preferred technique of tree-cutting, which is taking out as many trees as possible with just cutting a few. All that's left to work on is the getting-out-of-the-way part and you're golden!

Single cut a series of birch then take down the final tree for the domino effect, tis a lot safer than the donut strategy ...

Its quite a bit of RNG, and i think it counts armor, so at the start they have higher chance of murder.

I think around 40 damage is average falling tree damage, but it could always spike to triple that if it gets accelerated by other collisions. Fast rolling trees also can deal significant damage, but usually they roll slow and its only a few points.

Best way to deal with it is to just look around for a moment when the domino starts...

With this advice, I have now demolished an entire forest and now have to work out what I do with these logs.

Cheers.
