Extractor Question
How do extractors actually work? Is there a limited amount of sap you can get from each root, or do you only need 1 extractor and a whole lot of time to get enough sap for everything you could want to make with it?

As qwerm excellently put, something to note (that I personally found out as being a bit odd) is that multiple extractors on one root won't speed up the process. One extractor fill at a time.
With 2 extractors rather than come back and find 5/5 as if they work concurrently - you're more likely to see 10/0 or 8/2 - more extractors is like a buffer - I'd say 2 is optimal per root since a full load of 20 will fill your refinery (assuming you have the soft tissue).
I have built everything new and upgraded it all with just two extractors and one refinery. Seems well balanced as each Mistlands area I explored only had about 4 mines holding about 10 Black cores - just enough to build the essentials - And as I finished exploring the 2nd area I've just about finished all the gear. My advice - get the featherfall cape first! :)

I didn't read it all but
1 extractor and 4 roots is about right if you collect it religiously. Its speed depends on how much you sucked out, so you can either move root every time for max speed or leave it be and come back less often. I just leave it on a root until dry and then move it.
by the time you have drained 3 full roots to nothing the first one should be back up and running again.
I got more than I needed off a 3 root farm, but I wish there were 1 more in a reasonable distance.

"My advice - get the featherfall cape first! :)"......I totally agree. At first it didn't seem to be worth the resources, not at all---essential piece of gear in all biomes now.

Have to totally agree on the featherfall cape. Wish I had that earlier in game it would have saved me several deaths from falling while building and forgetting to eat. :)

I built a castle in the mistlands on one ancient root with only one extractor on it. It recharges very fast and i can empty it almost once per day, while building the base and doing buisness.

roots slowly refill with sap. if you leave just 1 collector on each root for good and come back every few days you endlessly get 10 sap from each root. they never fully dry up. only temporaly. they slowly regain sap (slower than a single collector will collect sap) and thus the collector will keep going. moveing them is just faster to get sap.
but since youre bottlenecked by soft tissue way more than sap (i got like 500 sap now but not even close the amount of soft tissue) this has very limited use anyway. tough 10 sap is used for the new meta 25% stam regen for 5 minutes boot mead. so it never will be useless either.

Roots recharge. If you collect infrequently enough they never even fade, I know this since I have more sap than I know what to do with. I just ran around with two extractors and a portal while exploring an doing infected mines, got more than enough for one person before I settled down somewhere and started farming mushrooms.

My wife and I have 6 extractors now. We put 3 per root and when the root runs dry we move to another. I haven't been back to a previously dried up root to see if it has recharged but I will now. One thing is for sure once dried out with 3 extractors in them they definitely do not recharge.
We've finally found enough skulls to craft magic gear and all staves for both of us. Now for magic porridge.
They do in fact recharge( eventually) but you need to remove the extractors to let them recharge properly else, you'll just keep extracting at a reduced rate. Ideally, you don't want to put more than one extractor per root, and you want to try to find a location that has several roots in relatively close proximity so you can either drain them all concurrently, or rotate a single extractor from root to root. having multiple extractors on a root, does not make them extract faster, but DOES let them collectively hold more sap at any one time, typically taking a minute for one sap to be extracted regardless of the number of extractors set up, and once dry, the extraction rate slows to a crawl unless you remove the extractor and let the root recuperate over 4-5 days.
Each root holds ~25 sap or so, and replenishes slower than an extractor can pull from it, so at any given time, you've got about 25-30 minutes per root( independant of number of extractors) before you're best off just stowing the extractors in a chest under the root for a few days, and coming back to do it all over again.

Sounds to me like you are trying to extract from an Ancient Root and from what I read those can't be destroyed or get sap from you need a Dvergr Root i tryied to use an extractor but when i do, a message saying "you can't use dvergr extractor on ancient root" appears.. but it says that "the ancient root is pulsating with energy".
ok i now know how to do. you have to place a "sap extractor" with your hammer!

I finally got the chance to use them, so I know now. You place extractors down on yggdrasil roots and they slowly collect sap. Eventually, the root runs dry and you need to find another one.
The roots will refill if you wait a bit. I'm currently tapping one root, I got lucky and it was inside a skull making it pretty safe.

I got lucky and found three roots within workbench radius right on the edge of the biome. It was easy to portal in, collect, and move the extractor around to keep the roots working.
