New items not in explored areas

In the fireside chat with the dev, they said that they hope people will start a new game to have it fresh.

They also said you won't find the new items (I presume for things like onions etc) unless you explore new areas in plains etc.

What does this mean exactly?

Does it mean I can still find new items in my current world in areas not explored, or do you definitely have to start a new game?

I believe from my rough assumptions that it's probably double the the radius of the fog you lift

if you have your old world with unexplored areas most likely new stuff will spawn in these unexplored regions even on an old save

thats what i get out of the fireside chat

just means the new items will only spawn in unexplored areas of the map, assuming you have anything left to explore that is.
