Trial by turnip...

I just found my 1st turnip seeds and am going through the process of 'growing the herd'.

The devs are on to something here - they've discovered a way to make time run s-l-o-w-e-r

:steammocking:

They must have had Dr. Strange consult on game mechanics :steamhappy:

I've noticed this with my Turnip crops as well. Even planted as quickly as possible, some lagged behind while others finished growing much quicker. Nevertheless, I got my Turnips.

On-topic, though: I got quite lucky in my first Swamp biome. It had an ample amount of Crypts (I think it still has 2 or 3 I haven't even taken ore from yet), and also a great amount of Turnip seeds.

The next Swamp I explored, while admittedly much smaller, only had one batch of seeds I could find. (And also only one Crypt)

But, more seeds is always good.

I'm getting the feeling I've been very lucky. :)

When being on an exploration trip around the trader location, I ventured a bit too much to the north and ran into the swamp of which I knew it was there (playing at the "boss seed map")

Decided to hugging the border between the BF and swamp and didn't take long before I saw not one, but two yellow plants which turned out to be turnip. So basically I started out with 6 seeds and I think I'm growing 18 turnips right now.

As for the math: I'm always using 1 in 3 veggies for seeds and the other two as ingredients for food. That way I'm certain I've got the same harvest at all times; while also having enough items left for food. Although with Carrots that's still tricky to achieve.

Thorin :)

That's my formula also. I aim for 50 seed carrots and 100 eating carrots grown at the same time and immediately replanted after harvest. I recently discovered that carrots can be grown on a near vertical terrain wall if cultivated when standing on top. Gonna try some vertical gardening here in the near future if only to decorate the ugly terrain walls :-)

heh the math is maddening (not hard, just maddening).
the darn things grow in 3s (1 plant -> 3 seeds -> ... cycles) and stack in lots of 50. They are consumed in 3s, but the food stacks in 10s.
so 10 onion soup is 30 onions, but you would want to grow 25 or 27 maybe, or grow a stack of 50 to store. Or whatever. No matter what you want to do, it never seems to work out evenly!

Took me about a dozen different mountain biomes until I found my first onion seeds. I'm still struggling to grow my crop but its slowly getting there.

Well I did. Take into account it depends on the size of the field you are planting in too. Mine isn't a very big field.
Well, yes, if you are only aiming for 3 plants (or possibly 9 if you are particularly lucky), then you can do it. However, jonnin was talking about 50 plants, which can't be done, from 3 seeds, in 5 days.

I'm still Bronze Age so when I saw a single turnip plant I grabbed it and ran back to my nearby Black Forest compound. The 3 seeds are now 9 plants and it's irl bedtime :-)

I found this narrow rectangular Swamp section with Meadows, Mountain, Black Forest and Ocean on each side. I put down a base a couple of weeks ago on the Meadows side but never found any turnips but picked up a decent amount of swamp drops. I moved to the opposite side (Black Forest) several real days ago and this was the 1st sign of turnips. I mark the passage of time in this base by counting the troll heads in storage lol

Can't wait to sink my teeth into some fresh sausages (gag) :steamhappy:

I've not spent much time with the cart. Just some local tree/stone hauling. When mining copper I'll set up a base at the node and dig, smelt, etc., right there. I build a tall terrain wall/moat to keep out the locals. After looting several burial chambers the portals let me slip in and out for groceries. Right now I have 12-13 portal pairs with a central hub. Thank god the map lets a player label location and portal ID's.

What?!?

I started with 3 seeds. I now have a full field of onions after just 5 in-game days.

If you do a dodge roll while pulling the cart you roll out of it and ditch it.

In terms of planting time I have bees near by and harvest the honey when I plant. At three honey they start popping.

Turnips are a biggie now especially as they are tied to a food upgrade station. Finding turnip seeds has always been a key search item for me, and now post HandH onions. Onions seem easier to locate as they are in boxes in pretty much a barren biome while turnips are often hidden and difficult to see.
