What game is the skill decay death penalty copied from?
The death penalty is so stupid that I can only imagine they copied it from one of the devs' favorite, other games. It must have made sense somewhere else.
TLDR: Punishing mechanics reward conservative play, not skill. There's some reward for skill, but if the punishment is high enough, and in Valheim it's far higher even than that, no amount of skill matters compared to caution. This is unfun in any game, but in a game about Viking warriors hyped up for facing death valiantly, it's even more stupid.

What do you find so "stupid" about it? you really have not made an argument here, just an emotional statement.

I didn't explain because I don't care about the opinion of anyone who thinks it isn't stupid. They're wrong. What do you find so "stupid" about it? you really have not made an argument here, just an emotional statement.
I just want to know where the idea came from, so I have an explanation. It must be copied from another survival game.

Lol it's not even that big of a penalty, I just started a new character for fun, having skills at 0 doesn't change much from having them at like 50.
Don't tempt me or I'll start arguing for increase in difficulty, like reset kills to 0 on death, after all that would be fair to be reborn anew after dying.

Well just stop dying geez. Hey I know, why don't you just CHEAT. I'm sure that will give you a big sense of pride and accomplishment. Also please use tl:dr properly, you don't get to say more on the tl;dr compared to everything else you just said, that's complete misuse of tl;dr lol.

I can imagine it working in other games, but it's amazingly stupid in Valheim. This suggests a developer used it because of its success elsewhere, not because they thought it would be good here.
Uh. So if there's no answer to my question, are you saying the devs invented this mechanic for Valheim? I never would have guessed that, and I certainly didn't say it. I gave the benefit of the doubt. and you just totally painted yourself a nice shade of a**hole here buddy. your subjective, emotional outburst its nothing more than opinion. besides, if you didn't care you wouldn't have posted it publicly and just made a suggestion directly to IG.

Do it if you want. Punishing mechanics reward caution, not skill, and change the way people play. It's already ruining the game. Argue to ruin a game you like more, if you want to troll the developers into shooting themselves in the foot. lol if anything the penalty isn't steep enough. There needs to be some penalty for dieing in the game, otherwise it's just insanely easy, its already easy enough as is. if your really having that much trouble with it, then can always add some mods to make things easier, but for myself, and those I play with, removing this would hurt the gameplay, not make it better.

I think it comes from Ultima Online. I see a lot of inspiration in Valheim from UO. When I started playing I was feeling like experiencing UO again.

If you think the way it's done here is stupid, I suggest you NEVER try Wurm Online.
No matter how you die in that game, you will ALWAYS loose 0.25 skill points in your Fighting Skill and the same amount in 2 other; randomly chosen; skills.
You got the luck you'll gain the lost skill 3x faster as usuall until your skill is at the same level as the moment you lost it, but even then, it's still a pain.
Imagine having your FS around 90-ish, gaining an average of 0.00003 skill points from a monster kill and loosing 0.25 points.......... Even with the 3x faster skill gain grinding back that 0.25 points will take a long time.
Compared to that, loosing some skill in this game is a walk in the park with both eyes closed.
Thorin :)

I could easily play the game in such a way that I never die again, but it wouldn't be fun. That's what's so suspicious to me here. If I run into a bad situation, I want fight it even if I'm unprepared and it's a terrible idea. Why would a developer discourage this?
Oh, that would make sense to me. It was the first MMO and had no competition, and devs just didn't know how to do death without making it super-punishing back then. I heard stories that WoW was revolutionary for only having some debuff on death instead of actual exp loss. It must have seemed normal for so long. I think it comes from Ultima Online. I see a lot of inspiration in Valheim from UO. When I started playing I was feeling like experiencing UO again.

You're down exploring a crypt for the first time, or landing on a new and dangerous island. Why are you scared? Because dying costs.
If dying cost nothing, you could jump off a cliff to go back to base. If dying cost nothing, you wouldn't have a stake in any of the battles. If dying cost nothing, your biggest challenge would be suppressing the yawn.
The real disagreement isn't about whether dying should cost, but how much, and you can manipulatel that via the dev commands.
