My latest theory in base design. No doors.

Yes, it's a mini base. The main base is three jumps away on a different continent. This particular base is at the confluence of swamp, meadow, mountain, and black forest, so it's quite valuable for resources.
The ground inside the base is higher than the surrounding ground on several sides, The moat side is too narrow for trolls. There are internal ladders so jumping is not a big strain.
Generally just running around the base when nasties attack is very effective for creating space for fire. On the on side it's possible to simply leap across the gap into the base for quick escape.
Wraiths can get over the walls but not into the internal house even though it has a large gap in the wall. I've not killed "Biomass" so no bats to worry about yet.

The fences exist solely to keep me from jumping over the wall and dying when hoping up.

Elsewhere. Neither gardens nor tamed animals belong in your base. No garden room. Where do you grow food?

Grow veggies, hogs, etc. in a remote location linked with a portal, with no other player base objects. If you don't have 3 or more player base items, it won't get raided.

Trolls seem scary but you have to remember to use the small blocks and not the big blocks for walls. AOE damage is spread out over the number of objects hit. Using a lower number of blocks for you walls means it takes more damage.
I'm pretty sure trolls are one of the monster types that have the ignore multi-target damage penalty, as most monsters ignore that unless they're small.

Unless that is a minibase used for some specific reason and soon to be abandoned, you are going to have some problems.
As noted above, log trolls will make mash out of your base. Their reach is 3 squares in, on every side. Plants and trees are safe but any player make building piece is not.
No garden room. Where do you grow food?
No stairs to top so you just have to hope their little blue faces pop over the wall so you can shoot them. With no stairs you have to jump and use half your stam in case you have to get out of Dodge, Basically you have trapped yourself in there.
That fencing makes great walls but you can't see out. If you have regular walls you could put glass in the windows so at least have some view but you have open chimney so it's all moot anyway for da bats.

I found it far easier to make a wall around 90% of the base. The AI will go to that open 10% area. Then put some spiky bits in the non-walled area.
Build the stuff you want safe in the back side away from the opening and they will not wander in and attack that.
If you build a wooden or stone wall around 100% of your base then the AI will just start hitting it wherever. The idea is to lure them to one spot to quickly kill them and get back to what you were doing.
Walling yourself in with earth walls make carts hard to use and transporting heavy amounts of goods and having to jump does not quite work.

Uh, you can get troll raids throughout the whole game, man. As long as you've killed at least one troll and the Elder. the raids are not that bad to need this and you only get troll raids for a while after elder not the whole game

If you've got local mobs in any other biomes, they'll be attacking your base, so it'd be a bit of an issue if you're just ignoring them. But the guy I was replying to said "you only get troll raids for a while," indicating that they end. They don't.

It is ugly. You can make it pretty by using wooden or stone steps but those also allow ground creatures to climb the earthen steps which defeats the purpose. I haven't had much success making steps with the hoe. It's ugly.

Cover the gaps with roof tiles, keep your farms elsewhere (with the only "player base" object a portal to bounce back and forth with so as to avoid raids), and you're golden.

the only issue that I can see here is the tree wielding troll. his attacks will go thru the wall so you need to build back from the wall or add a shallow ditch outside the wall to cover the distance. ive also used a ring of planted trees. the trolls will knock down the trees, yes, but i found that they cant walk over stumps and they actually hurt themselves trying to walk over felled trees. pretty funny watching a troll get stun locked on logs

You can use the hoe to make raised earth steps into an out of the base that the ground creatures can't climb but you can jump from level to level.
