there is very little you can't solve with a good (even the second one, the crude first one is a bit iffy) bow and totally naked with some food. Sneak up to the top of the trench and rain arrows on them until you can get your stuff back. They can't climb any better than you. Try 2 stamina foods and one healthy food for this. Fire arrows area good cheap approach early game, but wood will do in an emergency.

Enemy do take fall damage. If something does manage to climb, go weaponless and kick them back down or climb a rock or something more secure.

I really feel your pain. I was in the mountains at night in the middle of a vicious snowstorm and fell down a cliff. I went after it 4 more times and used up all my armor and weapons. Lost my wishbone too. To make matters worse I didn't mark my tombstones (pre H&H) so I didn't know the exact locations. Rebuilt everything from scratch. Lesson learned the hard way. I still kick myself and cringe when I think about it.

FYI, about 300 game days later I eventually found 4 of my 5 five bodies and got most my gear. There's still one to go. maybe one of these days I'll go looking again.
