Can corewood support stone floors ?

Just made myself a fancy new stone cutter and I'm keen to start playing with it. What I'm not keen on is wasting iron on beams just yet. Can a network of corewood beams support stone floors ? I'd like to place hearth etc over the basement.

No. Stone support stone. Try flatting the ground as good as you can and make sure that all the stone floors are blue(and surrounding walls).

iron beams are going to be your go to for structure support when building with stone or black marble but that will be a late game sort of investment.

Ha ha I tried and failed. Pretty easy to figure out.

I like the stone column idea under the hearth though. That's neat.

Iron beams WILL support stone. But yeah, generally, no.

You can actually use a webwork of regular wood beams anchored to stone walls to support stone floors, though the technique for getting it to work right can be a bit tricky. The laying down of stone floors like that requires that each new piece of stone floor be touching stone on at least two sides (so you need to start at a corner and work around in a collapsing spiral, like a spiderweb, or in rows, one at a time). Also, the maximum number of slabs width you can build before absolutely needing to boost up with stone pillar or wood-iron pieces obviously decreases the higher you get due to reduced stability.

If you want a hearth on a 2nd floor you can use a stone pillar to hold it up.

Just try it out, if something brakes you get full resources back.

The answer though is no. Stone can support stone (to a certain extend) and iron/wood-iron can support stone (to a greater extent).
