No experience for hitting inanimate objects now
Two days ago I trained up some skills in my training dojo with a big rock in the center. Today I started doing a little training and saw that I was getting no xp. I went outside and fought some greydwarfs unarmed and got a level out of it. Then I shot some arrows at a tree and got no xp, but I did when shooting living things. So I guess this changed with H&H? That would make my training gym obsolete.

Exploits should always be nerfed. Find another way...like playing the game?

Just treat it like a real home gym and hang clothes on it.

Yeah, the military and police should stop weapon training too, too much of an exploit.
They should just practice on live targets in the field...

"Alexa, what's the difference between reality and a video game?"
Then why gain experience at all, since as you say, it is a video game and not reality...

practicing archery costs arrows, getting xp for target practice is fair
not really sure about punching rocks, that just seems like you should break every bone in both hands

They did away with button mashing, you can niw hold down the button to do attacking/mining/cutting now. If you combined that with gaining exp from punching a rock it would be very broken. Just afk with the button held down.
I agree with getting rid if the mechanic, it was exploited. While stationary target practice may be a part of training, you certainly shouldn't be able to master skills with it alone. That would be like hitting a punching bag and nothing else making you a professional boxer.
It makes more sense to engage in combat anyhow, actual combat practice and loot, and if you're the sort who previously just afked with a button mashing macro, you might as well just of used dev commands to cut to the chase since you weren't putting actual effort into it anyhow.

I could see it being exploitive if you could level a skill up to 100 in a few hours, but hitting trees, rocks, or whatever takes a lot of time. You could say parking yourself at a greydwarf spawn point and killing everything that pops up is exploitive too.

Nah, actual risk and reward, you have to pay attention, keep buffs up, watch out for adds, time your attacks, and play the game. You can't just afk with the button held down or you'll come back to a dead character and skill loss.

That would only prove you a fool. Why punch rocks for hours when you can enjoy the game? Why "park" at a spawn point? I cannot understand for one minute why anybody would work so hard to bypass the planned progression system in a game.

Training with inanimate objects still costs time, and it's a nice quality of life thing to be able to rank up your skills a little before trying out a new weapon type mid-game.
Mechanically I don't see it as any different than grinding low level mobs, it's practical a little sooner and a little safer but also slower(especially once you can drop a portal near a spawner), and it gives you an additional type of functional building to flesh out your settlements, which is nice - buildings and infrastructure you will actually use just feels more immersive than purely decorative stuff you may never step foot in again after finishing.
How is a gym any more of an "exploit" than camping a greydrawf spawner when you've got the gear to render them a non-threat?

Fighting inanimate objects is surprisingly pointless. Who knew?
Good change. No risk, no reward.
