And I thought Deathsquitos were annoying...
Came back to Valheim after several months...
...crafted some nice leather armor, bows, fire arrows, killed Eikthyr...
...headed into the dark forest, found a nice ruin to turn into a fort, got some sertling cores and built a furnace...
...started chopping wood for the furnace...
...got devoured by wolves. WTF???!!!
Is it standard now for mountain critters to wander out of their biome and eat hapless adventurers? Yeah, my fort was near the edge, but wolves always used to have the decency to only spawn deeper inside, never got eaten at the edge before!

My hunt for the first Swamp was gruesome.
I don't hunt for biomes anymore. I use the Valheim map generator:
https://valheim-map.world/
Between sea serpents and deathsquitoes the game is just too punishing against long range exploration, it's not worth the effort. It's hard enough to chart a safe course in shifting winds even when you know exactly where you want to go. The map is a gamesaver.
I just find using the map reveal killing the fun of exploration.
Yeah sure it's a pain and has it's downsides, but until they create a better map creation generator, I won't use that reveal tool.
I would personally like to see a less arpeggio styled map, honestly having a sliver of an island that is meadows and a swamp tree is ridiculous.
Having a bigger landmasses would be a better direction imho. Having map creation options like civ would also be a nice option

What usually keeps the wolves from appearing in lowlands is the steep terrain elevation difference characteristic on plains and swamp borders. But black forest and meadows can also have pretty high terrain elevation as well, so, in turn, all the mountain creatures can spawn much closer due to lack of elevation difference.

everything wanders a short way to check out noise or just at random. Some boarders between zones are like a warzone with literally hundreds of grey dwarf leavings, deed/critter leavings -- Ive got a plains/mistlands spot where a squito left me like 10 bunnies for no effort (hooray). One of my homes is a BF/plains border with a river and meadows .. I can collect skeleton, dwarf, deer, lizard and occasionally other items every single morning.

It´s nothing new. Enemies from nearby biomes will try to cross the biome border if they are aware of you. Always did, nothing new here.
Tbh you were lucky it never happened to you before.

Not new. Happened to me in my second or third game ... was mining copper pretty close to the snow line and I turned into a one-bite wolf treat.
Noise. Tree chopping and mining will bring any and all mobs from a fair distance.
Learned the lesson just as you did. I now give the snow a wide berth and never, ever, ever chop/mine near it again.

Yeah, I think I've learned the same lesson... I guess I just never came across a fort quite that high up before. I've had some almost as close horizontally but always a bit lower vertically, that's probably what saved me previously.
Time to do some corpse running and find a new black forest home...

My hunt for the first Swamp was gruesome.
I have a small island, first swamp very small with one dungeon, and can constantly gleem materials as they keep fighting each other between Meadows and Swamp, a little patch of dark forest on edge.
To find a descent swamp to find more iron entailed, two serpent deaths at sea, 3 abominations, multiple Plains, and out running a pack of wolves after finding a mountain that is like 1/4 of my discovered map Everest you so small.
I was nowhere ready for the Swamp Biome let alone the other encounters. They have upped the ante on encounters, and for me, painful but worth the effort imho

Deathsquitos are a joke once you reach Swamp. Wolves are a bit scary if you aren't managing your stamina well and aren't aware of nearby terrain to take advantage of / not have bonemass power.
