Core wood from pine will go higher than regular wood.

Once you get to iron, you can build with stone as well.

Iron reinforced poles can be expensive and probably better suited for castle building.

They provide same amount of support, but beams cost less iron when going in one direction only. It kinda depends in what kind of shapes you want to create the primary supporting structure.
