try to find a dvergr underground tower. these have 2 floors. 1 is underground. enemies simply cannot walk down these stairs. this makes portals down there pretty damn safe.

another great choice are the small bunkers near dvergr piers at ocean sites when they spawn. easy to conquer as they have like only 2-3 dwarfs at most guarding them. and often carry a sap collector tool on top. oh and they come with doors installed. bring 2 iron and make a stone cutter. repair the bunker and now you have a good backup portal base. AND a decent spot to leave the boat. tough park it a bit off shore to be safe. so you can swim to it atleast.

then venture fourth and explore the biome slowly.
the mistlands i plundered are now full of holes instead of buildings and structures. kinda like planets the borg have visited....

The spots under the queen spawner are pretty dope to remodel and expand.

I 'repurpose' any Dvergr outpost I can find and 'liberate'....terrain wall off the ends of the small valleys nearby and 'purify' the land with workbenches!

I've got a NPC free zone right now where 3 small valleys converge...it's become my Mistland farm for Mushy's...sure I can hear the Gjalls nearby....been okay so far, once I walled off the valleys.

Keep yer crops out of LineOfSight, with walls, etc....I've got both, fenced in with stake walls and some open patches on the ground.

I'd look for a place that is naturally mist free—you'll find pockets of mist free areas as you explore. If the area is relatively flat and mist free this will also help with hunting rabbits.

Has ground you can cultivate. There are two types of ground Mistlands: the grass/green ground that you can cultivate and then the "stone" ground that you never can.

Has at LEAST 2 nearby Ancient Roots of sap extraction. Ideally 3-4 or more, though.

My "base" in Mistlands is little more than a place for my portal, mushroom farming area and a Smelter to make iron to then make a Blast Furnace I needed to make the Sap Extractors...

There are alot of limitations to what you can grow in ML, so IMO it's best to build on the border of ML and plains if you want a fully functional base.
