Fishing is still... well... just BAD!
The new Fishing "System"...
BTW just added new Fish and Biats is not a system... but ok ^^
Try to Fish a "high" Fish (even after you're Equiped like a GOD and also ALL Bosses are down) with low Fishing Skill dont even give you the "chance" to catch it...
It just Drains your Stamina like HELL and gone -> š
But here we go now...
To actually TRAIN Fishing you just stand ANYWHERE (no Water is needed!), Cast the Line as FAR as possible, Pull it in and get "Skill" -> REALLY?! THAT IS called Fishing?! :D
...
Maybe call it "Air Fishing" :P
This is (to put it mildly) just S h i t!

- Most of the Baits are useless becasue of this
- Train Fishing for HOURS by Air-Fish NOTHING to get kinda "usefull" Fishes

I feel like fishing got slightly improved system this update since you can get valuable items other than fish in this game like iron, copper, barley, onion seeds and so on which can get really handy if doing challenges or getting ores early (though the percent chance is 10% by almost all the fishes).
The big issue i have with fishing is that it doesn't offer new foods for fishing early to mid other than raw fish and even then there are better foods options since fishing takes time while option to take out a neck, boar or a deer takes less time than fishing.
Though fishing does or could become valuable in late game.
Fish Wraps are kinda worse than lox meat pie in plains biome era which is true if you have enough lox meat and thistles yet if you waste time fishing early and mid and getting a lot of fish then it becomes an alternative to it since you don't get enough health or duration yet having a lot of fish and barley flour means that it might be cheaper, less time consuming or risky as killing loxes takes forever and thistles can be hard to get at times.
Meanwhile at Mistlands, getting anglerfish and bread might be the most valuable food as not only do you get the best stamina food with same health as a cooked boar meat but catching quantities of angler fish also gives you Soft tissue (which is very handy as soft tissue is very limited compared to other valuable mistlands items) and having at least fish and bread makes it less reason to have 2 stamina foods.
I still do think fishing is very niche but far better than previously plus this small update did make it a reason to go fishing mainly for the valuable items and late game food. Its just that valheim needs fish foods for early and mid to have a reason for fishing as currently most players would just forget it and go just in a usual ways.

That's not impressive, the bosses are the easiest part of the game. I don't think I ever have even been hit by a boss, just one of the queen's adds.

So your issue is simply how bad the fishing skill leveling system is? Who ā„ā„ā„ā„ā„ā„ā„ cares? You can catch any fish at lvl 1 and lvl 100 if you cast withing 1-10m the level means nothing. Maybe just use a mod that helps increase the skill for you quicker?

@fuba Not nonsense at all. There are certain things that are absolutely needed to progress in the game; progression meaning terminating each of the existing biome 'bosses'.
For example uptiered armor is 'needed'.
Fishing is not.
Valheim is not a pure 'sandbox' game, but rather it is game with linear progression and an end goal which is set in a semi-sandbox environment. For instance you are given the freedom to collect iron ore in a number of ways, but you have to collect iron (read need) to ultimately progress.
And given the above fishing is not 'needed' in that it does not provide anything a player cannot obtain in some other way (unlike iron ore) to aid their progression.
Of course you can play Valheim anyway you want, but that does not negate the fact the game has an end goal and has only certain ways to reach that goal. Everything else is extra. That does not mean those extra things cannot be enjoyable, but they are not needed to reach the end goal of the game as currently presented.
(and if you need an example of a true sandbox game an obvious one would be Minecraft if simply because it has no 'predetermined goal' at all, unlike Valheim in which our goal is too eliminate all the bosses)

Up until a few weeks a go fish wraps were end-game food. Now we have food from the Mistlands so no one (particularly those that just started playing the game) thinks of anything other than the brand new foods as important or "needed", but in fact if folks weren't racing through like their very ashes were on fire to this new end we have now, fishing would be important, maybe not critically necessary but certainly worth the time and energy spent.
I am glad they are working on fishing but I wish they had a better handle on food in this game and the fishing skill set up. When I see what they consider upgrades or improvements as dumping more stupid mats in our very limited inventory along with the fish, having too many baits and too many fish to make any sense, to have a fishing hat that most will only get for the fashion as it's like the feather cape, you finally get it long after you could have really used it. Give me a fish creel, that would be helpful.
Regarding uptiered armor being necessary, not so much. There is a very long and very boring video of a guy that killed all the bosses with items that only came from the meadows. Masochistic but have to applaud him for his enthusiasm. (through Yag.)

or they could just add a new building : fishing NET. can be attached to a longships back side or put into the ocean or lake a bit offshore^^
aside from fish and bread there really isnt enough gain in fishing the higher tier fish currently. this system has a long way to go still.

Short casting from the seat of your ship is the key. Reel in until the bait is just in the water, the fish will bite just the same. When they do, stand up and pick the fish directly off the line without reeling in. You can catch multiple fish with a single piece of bait this way.
Disappointing they nerfed the leaping fish as every now and then one would jump right into my ship. With good reflexes you could even grab them directly out of the air.

You donĀ“t need to train it at all and still can catch most fish easily.
Use a boat and park next to fish, then just drop the line into the water from the boat. 1-3 meters is enough. You donĀ“t need to cast far. Use three good stam foods and you wonĀ“t have any trouble. The trick is to cast as short as possible. Fish donĀ“t care and still bite and you donĀ“t have much to reel in.

The addition of mats coming in with your fish made me laugh. What were they thinking? The big problem, well one of them anyway is inventory. Every fish and fish level is different, so the obvious answer was to add mats to a successful catch (dope slap applied). Does anyone see the problem here? Now I have a small pile of junk lying on the ground so it doesn't clog my inventory when I fish, and I'm sorry but getting a rock is not my idea of a reward. Nope, but it's a great troll.

Mhm... Consider that fishing is completely optional and is in no way needed to progress through the game successfully.
Sorry, that is one of the most nonsene comments for a Sandbox Survival Game!
What is "progress through the game successfully" mean? ^^
Is it maybe Breed Chickens?
Are Chickens NEEDED?
Or is it to Breed Lox?
Are Lox NEEDED?
Or is it to Farm Barly?
Is Barley NEEDED?
Or is it to Farm Onions?
Are Onions NEEDED?
Or is it to Build a BIG Castle?
Is a Castle NEEDED?
Or is it to Build a Shield?
Are Shields NEEDED?
Or is it to kill All Bosses?
Are they "all" NEEDED?
i think you get it now? ^^
Becasue (and that is important):
For an "Endless Sandbox Survival Game" like Valheim, there is NO proper Way to "progress through the game successfully"!
So if i wan't to Fish and let's say MY progress through the game is... Fishing, what now?
The Fishing is totally "dumb" right now, especially it was announced with a HYPE, that is all i said.
Use a boat and park next to fis
Yeah i know that... I catch fish with my Longship. Parked it outside of a small outpost where there were a lot of fishing jumping and every time I went out to it I just was able to scoop a few fish off the deck.
But im actually talking about the "Fishing Skill" using the Baits not "how to get a fish", that are completely different things in Valheim :D

Could it be better? Sure.
Might it become better? We don't know, but there are a number of game updates to come so who knows.
And I may be in the minority, but I would rather see effort spent on new content than on improving fishing, at least in these development stages of the game.
Ultimately I would suggest instead of noting what you see as 'shortcomings' you instead present actual suggestions to improve the mechanic.

I catch fish with my Longship. Parked it outside of a small outpost where there were a lot of fishing jumping and every time I went out to it I just was able to scoop a few fish off the deck. I got 90 raw fish meat over the couple of (in-game) days that I had the boat there.
I did not enjoy the actual fishing skill, so it's nice I can catch fish using my longship as a net.
As for how fishing could be improved, I agree with the OP. Simply changing it so that skill is gained by actually CATCHING fish would go a long way to making it better.
Also they should change the way stamina drain works when fishing. Rather than the current system "if you don't have high skill you simply cannot cast far without running out of stamina", it would maybe be more fun if it was a bit of a mini-game, such that you had to time when you reeled vs. let the line play, and you lose stamina only if you don't time it right.
