Bonemass more like bonetrash
I'm pretty new to the game I'm still in the "iron age" so to speak, and I just finished making a full set of iron armor, bow, sword, and shield then sailed all the way to where I summon bonemass (about 10 irl mins because he was in a different swamp) only to find out I don't have the items I need to summon him SO I tried to sail all the way back to my base to get the bones but I ended up dying so I had to remake the boat get the bones sail to my grave get my stuff then finally go to summon him, but then I found out my sword and arrows did nothing because he's only weak to frost arrows and blunt damage, at least that's what google told me. I can admit everything I said above was mostly because I'm stupid but also because as far as I know nothing tells you before hand what item you need to summon bosses and what they're weak against right??

Imagine if it were real life. No one is there to tell you what you need until you stumble upon his spawn area. I guess it’s a bit annoying, but a bit more realistic, instead of having a sign pop up saying “Next boss will need…..”
don't get me wrong I enjoy playing the game this is more of a story of me being smooth brain then being salty about it

I killed the Bone Mass first try. Spent hours building a FOB (with portal) and being prepared before i summoned him.

Honestly you get so many bones, and you can't avoid picking them up in the muck piles, that I just assumed at some point they were going to be a building material as well.
Maybe there should be something like a recipe pop up for boss items the first time you pick one up or interact? Needs item and already interacted with boss info spawn point.
Put info in the compendium when last item interacted with kind of thing.

There should be a boss who is weak to slash, and also a boss who is weak to pierce... or just remove boss resistances to pierce and slash... Imagine that slash type weapon will help you for an entire run ....
Blunt weapons are top tier because works in all biomes , slashand pierce not so much ( specially to the bosses )

A little tip regarding all bosses.
When i go fight a boss i build a small house at the edge of the boss biome.
Example if its in the swamp i build it 100m outside the biome and put a teleport inside so if i die i can fast teleport there vs having to sail.
Another tip if you die then when you respawn you can run in and grap your gear in the swamp and run away and at a safe distance wear your gear again.
Regarding bonemass, then yes he is weak to frost damage.. But that is also a bit of a problem since you can only get the required things to build them in the mountain biome with the snow.. And that is a dangerous place to be for many reasons such as you are not really strongg enough to fight many of the creatures there, so blund weapons are what you need.
I actual belive before you summon bonemass you could technical speaking build some defensive wood spikes and maybe that will also damage him or at least make him slower.
Its also a very good idea to drink an anti poison drink.
Another tip.. in the swamp you are pretty safe if you build a house up in the trees.
( i dont think you can put the teleport up there, but try ).
Use this house to store supplys and if you build in a house near the water you can sail there and load things up fast and get out of the swamp biome.
Do not leave your ship unatended in the swamp the leeches will find it and sink it
You can make a wood wall out into hte water and so to speak keep them away but in general dont leave your ship in the swamp ;-)

The trickiest thing about withered bones was just remembering that they actually exist. Their purpose clicks pretty quickly if they are in the front of your mind. The fact that they are found almost exclusively in crypts does make you think that there is something important about them, and they also partially share their namesake with the boss so there's that too. The boss spawner do give clues, but in case of Bonemass it's a bit on the vague side. I had completely forgotten about the bones until I had literally tried EVERYTHING that dropped in the swamps, except, of course, the bones. :P
Also, portals are a thing. You ALWAYS have the materials for a portal on you.
Edit: Punctuation is also a thing. I tend not to read a wall of text without any punctuation, because it is REALLY hard to read.
However the boss spawning item is discovered differently from how deer trophies and ancient seeds were found, so you do have to figure out where the rules deviate from what was previously established. A lot of people will develop a habit of dropping every one that they accidentally pick up when they know they aren't ready for Bonemass yet; when people go to crypts they are usually thinking about iron after all. And they will miss others because they simply are not eye-catching. You can block them out of the list of things that your brain is looking for without necessarily meaning to.
They are a low-profile nuisance until you actually feel ready for the boss, whereas the earlier boss items demand minimal consideration because they can be located a stones throw away from your first base and you need less of them.
I don't know what more they could do to remind the player that they need them beside a different message though. I would not be against the devs giving withered bones some manner of green radiance similar to Bonemass, just to see them more, keep them fresh in our minds as we cross them. Just a little quality of life thing, even if it helped us spot out those ones we stashed at home for safe keeping at the beginning of the swamps all that time ago.

The color of the damage numbers is what clues you in on weaknesses and resistances.

Nah, only hints for what you need to summon bosses. I figured out on my own what I needed to summon all bosses... except for bonemass. That one had me stumped. I had to look it up. For damage, it was trial and error. I quickly decided arrows were too weak against bonemass, so I melee'd him. A mace was already my standard weapon, so I didn't have to fuss with that.

You learn by death in this game.
Also it sounds like you have not discovered portals yet.

I felt the game gave me fair opportunity to realise that blunt weapons worked well against other enemies in the swamp which were either boney or massy.
Although I can't recall what each individual one says, I'm fairly sure the boss spawners bring up a message that clues you toward the things you need if you attempt to use them without the right items in your hand.
