When crouched and sneaking, there is a reticule. When one is hidden it appears as a cross +, when sensed it expands, resembling the ovoid shape of an eye, when detected it is a full circle resembling an open eye. If one attacks while undetected you do backstab damage (even with a bow) 3x's the normal damage.

Did they entirely fix the Viking Space Program or just tone it down a little?

Not with a dagger. The sneak bonus is crazy good, and combo with a bow for maximum destruction.

Well I was thinking in terms of movement speed but maybe thats because my sneak skill is low. I might have to give that play style a try

How do you know when you're about to be detected?

There is an increased damage modifier while in sneak-mode while a dagger (knife) or bow is equipped. I can 2-shot trolls with my bow while crouched. I have found if I am alert and listening, I can detect most enemies at distance (while travelling not in sneak-mode), whereby I crouch, just before I am detected by them, then attack.

This is not limited to just knives and bows -- it applies to any weapon with "Backstab bonus" in its stats.

The razor is amazing for a stealth-based character, and it also looks cool.

The harpoon is good for all kinds of things, serpents being the biggest but far from only target. I find it's fun to harpoon deer, necks, and all kinds of critters and then drag them around. An excellent way to waste time, for sure.

Isaac_Clark has it right. While access to bronze makes it easier, a raft and antler pickaxe are all you technically need to harvest chitin. (You could possibly make the Abyssal Razor before ever building a forge!) This means you can feasibly have an iron-equivalent knife before killing the Elder.

The Abyssal Harpoon allows you to drag targets where you want. This means being able to beach Serpents and wrangle Boars/Wolves.

Back in the days of the Viking Space Program (VSP) you could use the harpoon to launch friends a couple miles.

Why they ever "fixed" this i'll never know.

the harpoon uses no ammo to cap birds. There are any number of pulling the enemy around uses (pull into a pit with fire, etc) but not too many 'save ammo' uses. I dunno if it can kill a squito or not.

the razor is a decent knife if you do stealth attacks, some people sneak around in troll armor and one-shot the enemy instead of toe-to-toe fights.

The harpoon will be used for pulling the sea serpent on land.

The Abyssal Razor is basically the iron-tier knife. The harpoon attaches whatever (non-tamed) creature you hit with it to you. At that point, your stamina will start draining at a rate dependent on the distant between you and your target. So if you hook a serpent and then drop sails and haul a** for dry land your stamina will disappear before you even realize it's low. I suggest going at half sail or even rowing speed if you think your boat will last long enough. Also you can chug stamina mead to give yourself a boost while fighting the serpent.

So why do you want to drag the serpent to dry land instead of just shooting them? Well the serpent has two guaranteed drops and one possible drop. Only the meat will float on top of the water. If you kill a serpent in the water their scales and head trophy will sink immediately and you won't be able to get them. The serpent trophy looks very cool, and the scales can be used to make an ok but very stylish shield.

One can harpoon tamed animals after setting "Friendly Fire" (settings) to on.
