Unmineable Ground
I'm digging a moat around my base and I can't mine bits of the ground even though I've mined deeper than where it's at. I'm not seeing that it's a special ore and I'm using an iron pickaxe. Is there any fix to this problem?

But how's the ground above when it starts to rise up below in the excavation? Is there any kind of a climbing slope just beside the Altar site proper? Or the Altar is on top of a hill or a wide flat ground, always? Sometimes there's sloped ground and sometimes it's flat.
Fairly flat ground all around, except for slight rise on left side, and that side never gives me any issue, however, it's the right side that slopes upward in the previous pic i posted, and clearly you can see that the right side of the altar is pretty flat, so IDK.

I chose this seed specifically because of how level the ground is around the altar. Here's a shot of the same altar (same seed), different playthrough, but I made the entrance on the right hand side (covered the tunnel with stairs etc,), and facing the same way as before, you can see the fairly flat ground all around the altar.

It's pretty close to the same every time... sometimes i have a flat floor, while other times i have a very uneven floor. It's obviously not up against a hill or anything.

My personal observation, after digging underneath Elder altar many, many, many times on many servers, is that starting along one edge of the altar, digging straight down (the 8m it allows), that I don't always end up with a completely level, flat floor... I have had differences of several meters, meaning I have had spots that were not the full 8m deep, as if there were an uneven "bedrock" layer under the terrain.
notice on the left side, in the far corner, the floor starts sloping up...

Obviously, under the altar, the dirt was not sticking up through the altar floor, so why there is an incline underneath, is unknown. Sometimes I get a completely level flat floor at the same altar on at least 13 maps of the same seed. I did this many times on the same seed to experiment with various Elder altar base builds. Sometimes there's sloped ground and sometimes it's flat.

If that raised ground there was originally much higher, then you can't go deeper. How far you can dig down is always the same, based on how high the ground was when you first started digging.
That looks like that was the top of a hill or mound that was higher than its surroundings originally.

Yeah I flattened the land beforehand, thank you Assuming that the hill you dug into got much taller than shown, you've reached the height cap for modification. It's +/- 8m, 2 log poles stacked on each other. You can dig down 8m from the default or raise it 8m.
