Black Forest too hard. Any hints?

So I built a nice little wooden shack, upgraded all weapons and armor as far as a workbench lvl3 admits. I challenged Eikthyr and defeated him. I thought I was doing well until I went into this black forest. I got lambastered by a ghost in a dungeon. I got lambastered by a blue troll and his minions. I'm constantly running around naked trying to get my belongings back. This game feels totally different since I defeated Eikthyr. Any hints or links?

The Black Forest isn't actually that difficult. If you don't have it already get:
  • Leather armor and a cape.
  • Craft a bronze axe, which is generally good for combat in the Black Forest and you can use it to chop fancy woods.
  • Craft a wood shield (you can customize the color! Look at the top of the crafting screen for a button called "style" under the item name!) and upgrade it at least one level. This allows you to parry skeletons with swords and block arrows.
  • Get fine wood and craft a finewood bow and fire and flinthead arrows. That will allow you to fight and kite trolls (a crude bow works too).
  • For food berries or honey + cooked boar and deer meat is enough for pretty much anything in the Black Forest. If you still struggle with HP/stamina get tin and build a cauldron, which allows you to cook better food.
  • Don't go out at night. You will get swarmed.
  • Consider to surround your base with stakewalls, otherwise the "The Forest is Moving" event might get a bit annoying, especially when they go for your carrots or other structures outside.
If you get the first three things (leather armor, bronze axe and upgraded wood shield) you should be fine.

When fighting Trolls, use the cave entrance for cover,. Or use tall stones and keep moving around them, as you take arrow shots at the troll,.
When fighting the minions you can stand on top of tall stones, and shoot at them. any higher ground is better against them,. I use a mase and just nail them.
When inside the burial chambers use a stagbreaker, stand infront of the doors and use it, dont open the doors. the blast hit will injure anything on the other side of the doors. ,.
And yes as you beat bosses it releases more difficult levels of creatures and higher level ones. I have TWO Star trolls and draugers, plus wait for you to find an Abomination in swamps,, exciting stuff , HINT,: you can get Trolls to fight other big creatures.

Caves (and their entrances) are still useful as temporary camps. Enter a cave in stealth mode by the right side, and stop several seconds to assess whether it's inhabited or not.

By the coast, some flat rocks are almost always safe to light a campfire and wait here until dawn, cooking the meat of the day and just resting. Deep in the land, if surprised by night, look for those locations in this order:
  1. Known caves or burrial chambers with no denizen inside (in main room for chambers): you can safely set up a campfire, cook and rest until dawn;
  2. Unknown caves or burrial chambers: stay outside under stone cover, and don't set up any fire, just stay quiet in stealth mode and go "afaik" until dawn. Night spawns won't see you if you hide in the entrance of a burrial chamber, for example;
  3. A cluttered place, either by trees or rocks, preferably in a hollow, so as to break a maximum of lines of sight from night spawners who are reasonably far away. Backed to a large stone is better. Stay quiet and stealthy.

Work towards making a second set of armour & additional weapons and a shield to facilitate reclaiming your equipment from your tombstone after getting killed https://valheim.fandom.com/wiki/Troll_Set . Keep a chest with your backup gear near your most often used spawn point, and make sure it contains at least 1 of each food type you are currently using. Always try and make the highest level foodstuffs possible and I recommend always having health potions in your inventory, that can also be loaded into your top of screen equipment bar for quick use. Health potions can make the difference between life and death through poisoning, drowning, freezing and when taking extreme amounts of damage from enemies.

I've been doing permadeath runs lately, so I've been getting a lot of practice starting over in the Black Forest. (Though I might want to start trying that stagbreaker tip in the crypts. I've been doing that in the swamp crypts, but for some reason didn't think to try it in the BF crypts. Stagbreaker requires core wood from pine trees, not fir trees.)

In my opinion, the best "weapon" to use against the trolls is the pickaxe. They can't cross ditches. If you set up a base in the meadows close to the BF, then dig a steep ditch around it, nothing can walk in. Make the inside slope too steep to jump out of. If it's big, put a few workbenches around so nothing spawns inside it. I usually lead trolls back to my base and then pick them off with a bow while they're stuck on the other side of the ditch. Use a single wood beam as a bridge. You can cross, but the greys can't figure it out. A single piece of troll armor greatly increases your chances of surviving the crypts. More is better.

Until you get that first piece of troll armor, close the door and retreat from anything in the crypt that looks dangerous. Close the door so they can't chase you. I always put a campfire in the first room. It can refresh your rested buff, sometimes distracts skeletons into hitting it, and most importantly can help you navigate in there. You might still get a core or two while avoiding spawner rooms. You need at minimum 5, to build either kiln or smelter, then alternate, or 10 to have both. Once you're adequately geared up, cautiously go after the spawner rooms because the room after usually has more cores and often gives the elder location.

I just ranted about this recently. Here I go again.

Saying someone is bad at a game means absolutely nothing. We all start as clueless as the next person when we first open the game. You, suitsa, are not MAGICALLY “good at the game” or superior to this guy. Everyone needs to learn the game mechanics before they are proficient at playing a game. Instead of wasting a breath to tell someone they’re “bad”, simply tell them they have to play the game for longer, or give them some hints. I personally used the wiki to discover the enemies’ weaknesses, and what weapons to go for, so that would be my recommendation. You must be very insecure if that’s the only answer you can muster, otherwise I don’t understand why you’d bother commenting because it’s a waste of time.

Yeah, when you change biomes it gets noticeably tougher. The hardest change is from Black Forest to Swamp. Are you in top tier armor- have you upgraded your leather armor all the way? That helps a LOT. Also, when you first go into a new biome, you need the best food you can get. For moving into Black Forest, that's probably roast deer meat, roast boar, and red mushrooms. But you want to grab some blueberries in Black Forest so you can make Queen's Jam. Also, upgrade your shield and practice parrying. Either run away from trolls, or kite them using fire arrows. As soon as you can, make a bronze buckler and keep parrying. Ghosts are nasty in the Burial Chambers, but they hate fire arrows. You can run back to the entrance of the chamber and stand on the ramp, and they can't hit you as much. Oh, when you go into a chamber, build a fire right at the entrance so you heal faster and can get the rest bonus right before you leave. Good luck!

*Focus on Food. Honey. Try looking for hives. Pick up every berry and mushroom you see. Kill every boar and deer you come across.

*Troll armor. Assuming you have a base of operations(which you should, for storage.), stock up on wood, resin, and feathers. Feathers are easily hunted by killing birds during stormy days. Resin, wood and feathers makes fire arrows which are very effective against trolls.

*Avoid caves until you have upgraded Troll Armor. That is my personal advice. Until you shore up your base and supplies, you won't really have a need for what's in caves. Number one focus at this point is stabilizing your food system.

*The Nine volt Reindeer gave you access to copper and tin(Black Forest). This is the first natural progression in the game(The Bronze Age). This upgrades everything so do not ignore this. At this point, Cave exploring will be needed.

After all this, it's all downhill, more or less. Do not be stupid or lazy, because YOU WILL PAY FOR IT. Plan ahead and always assume when you adventure that you WILL die; Have a backup plan if the worst case scenario occurs.

The Black Forest is, imo, where you'll do the most sneaking of your play through.
Get comfortable with sneaking. Turn the music down a bit and slap on some headphones. Keep your eyes and ears open, the trolls can seemingly appear from nowhere.

Do NOT explore at night. Sleep through the night if you can. Greydwarves spawn like crazy at night, and they can be hard to see at a distance due to the hills and trees.
The worst thing that can happen in your early BF adventure (besides multiple trolls, lol) is running into a TON of GDs at night, and not being able to escape because you have low stamina due to bad food. EAT AND EAT WELL!

Fire arrows are a good investment for your new enemies. Otherwise, save your materials and only make wood arrows for most things.

The ghosts totally suck, but they're rare. You'll find maybe 1 in every 10 or so crypts might contain a ghost. Their attacks can be blocked, but you may want something better than a wooden shield. The worst thing about them is they have no attack animation, so you'll need to learn the timing of their attacks to know when to block. Honestly, you should try avoiding them until you have better gear. There are always more crypts.

trolls don't have minions; you just got a group of other crap at the same time.
trolls are best dealt with using fire arrows and a run, shoot, run approach until you get a bit farther along.

How to BF:
First, do a few crypts until you have 15 or so of the cores. Make your smelter and kiln, and use the others to make portals as needed.
At this point you could use a fine bow. The critical to have first items are a bronze axe, which you can fight with and cut fine wood, and a fine bow, fire arrows, and the best other stuff you have on hand, and as soon as you can a cultivator.
with that in hand, kill green eyed and red eyed dwarf and trolls with fire arrows. The blue eyes and anything else, use your axe. Lay in a supply of bronze/copper/tin fine wood and core wood until you have a forge upgraded, a cooking pot, workbench upgraded, and now do your armor and weapons as you see fit (troll or bronze armor, both have pros and cons... troll can be scarce, but its easier, bronze takes a lot of ore, but its obtainable). Continue to upgrade your home and gear as far as you can push it: the enemy should be manageable now and soon the second boss will be (also a candidate for fire arrows). Don't forget to produce honey, carrot and better foods.

the key to the BF is dealing with trolls and the 2 tougher dwarf variants. Fire arrow works on ghosts too, if your weapon is not working (I think they ignore blunt mostly). From here forward, if you assume that every time you make a sound outside (not in a cave etc) it will summon a monster, you will not be far off the mark. You can use stealth as a radar to know if something is seeing you or near...
