I think I have invented a New way to play.
By all means, if someone else has had this idea shame me, but I have been playing this way with one of my characters as a solo play thing.
The way it works is you start a new random world preferably with a new character just for this.
You play in that world until you die. If you die you can get your body and take as much as you can fit in your inventory with you, but after you die you log out of that world and then delete it and make a new one.
If you die trying to get your body, you lose it. It's gone. I have also been playing it so that if that happens you have to just delete the world and make a new one with out supplies.
When I started I was just deleting the world after death, but my wife suggested the body retrieval thing and I thought it was fair. Plus, starting over from scratch every time got boring.
It has been entertaining. I'm on world 5 and have bronze gear. The first two or three worlds were the ones I was just restarting on death. I figured I would share and see if anybody else enjoys it. It makes the game feel fresh and lets you see new seeds.

I might have to try your twist on permadeath. Normal PD is pretty much how I played until Mistlands came out, but I suspended it, thinking that I would never make it to Mistlands (probably true), but keeping some progress would make it much more doable.
My last playthough before Mistlands was a no-map, no-portal, perrmadeath run, and I ended up dying while planning my "retirement home"!
I was nearing end-game, so I went looking for a place to build my permanent base, and found a beautiful spot on the shore of a lake in black forest and meadows, with a small patch of plains just over the hill for farming.
There was nothing on that little patch of plains, but, as it turns out, it could still spawn fulings without warning!

You know what, taking the base with you pretty much sounds like the no-portal challenge already. And few times i died without properly resetting my spawn points which did leave me butt naked in the middle of nowhere to pick up my behind somehow back through oceans and plains to place where i died or main base in that challenge. With this last one I deconstructed work stations to bring the harder to get materials with me. I left stuff like stone and wood. I obviously brought my gear and I brought bronze nails so I could make a wagon in the new world. Like I said, it was less about hard-coring the experience and taking away some frustration and monotony.
I feel like death related penalties wont do too much if we are allowd to keep base/materials so its hard to balance. So im gonna stick to the other challenges, keeping an eye here for more ideas... gl!

I have tried several "Ironman" modes.
1.) When you die, all is lost (char + world) - but this gets boring if you get unlucky situations in the game
2.) When you die, you lose all, but for defeating a boss you get an extra life - my favorite Ironman mode
3.) No Ironman, but you are restricted to only 2 food slots - that can be very exciting
I hope the devs will integrate something like that in the final game, maybe with some achivements when beating the game in such a mode.
and PS: i like your idea, sounds like a good compromise.

Not that new sadly.
True hardcore action rpg rules would be delete all upon death and full restart.
What you've got is a lenient version of hardcore.
Adding personal rule sets to sandbox games is part of their replayability.

The problem I have with such a hardcore mode in this game is that you're already dead. Valheim is Viking Purgatory. So like, permadeath doesn't really make in-lore sense. And I'm normally a Hardcore gameplay enjoyer.

No, no, no. You are doing it wrong, correct way is to DMCA Valheim youtubers and get the game delisted on steam if somebody dares to say its not your idea... thats how it went for Workers & resources recently. Yay for US justice system. By all means, if someone else has had this idea shame me
The idea seems cool thou, do you deconstruct buildings and stuff or just take whatever you have in boxes? What about boss items? Boss heads?
Moders tears are probably the most important single thing you can take, as with that you can basically ignore all bosses you've done on the other world. In a sense this makes the game slightly easier as you wont trigger some of the raids.
Also what about co-op? Would you do any changes?
Tbh more meaningful deaths sound nice, but are hard to pull off with the mechancis Valheim has, and how base/items are the actual progression, and lack of loss of materials on repair/deconstruction means the grind is too front loaded for true hardcore, and too weak for this kind of "take your stuff" version. Good attempt thou.

For me it was less about making a hardcore mode and more about making deaths less of an issue, ironically. The gambling on a new seed is exciting and overrides the frustration of dying. Kinda like letting go. True hardcore would be killing both the world and the character, but because Valheim has contiguous characters with skills and stats I thought it might be fun to have those options in the new world.

I agree that permadeath breaks Valheim's fantasy premise and therefore is a modification of the strict RPG game.
In some games our ability to come back to life is inexplicable, purely a QOL mechanic, but in Valheim it's part of the story.
Still, I think strict RPG is something players deviate from a lot. I have used turf-nerfing without even thinking about it, even though it degrades the fantasy right in front of your eyes and has to be invoked via graphics settings, which is not part of the game's play interface. (But it's so useful! I wish there was a mead we could brew that had a similar effect)
OP has the right idea. You can extract many games from Valheim and play it your way.
