Is there a way to numerically reveal the topography (elevation)?

The seed I'm on has a mountain biome that goes up to almost the same height as a branch of Yggdrasil. This got me wondering how high up can some mountains be. Is there an option in game that shows a players coordinates? AFAIK valheim-map.world doesn't show a value for elevation.

ahhh that's awesome! I was thinking, damn this mountain is high up! Those two peaks are going to make a great base. My only problem is linking the two with a bridge. I think the only real way to do this is with a tree.

I see that the large map defines general topology, mountains and coastlines, but not the other biomes or the shape of the borders between them. Bizarre. It'd be interesting to compare an area where one world is plains and another swamp, given they have different geography and elevations.

Obviously you zoom out your map, and see if you have a recognizable island shape that you can then look for in the full world map. If you don't have distinctly shaped islands you can always reveal your full seed in the valheim world generator website, and from there you should be able to find your bearings in the full map rather easily.

I tried that. My Mountain and island has a very distinct shape but I couldn't find it on the pic posted above.... I beginning to wonder if it's actually the mountain labeled hook,

You can use the console command "pos" to reveal your characters's coordinates in the game world. (To use the console, you need to add the "-console" command line parameter before you launch the game on Steam, and then you have to enter dev mode by typing "devcommands" after opening the console. The console opens when you press F5 if you did the command line parameter correctly.) I think the Y coordinate is the elevation, but I'm not sure about the units. It could be meters, it could be something else too I guess.

The next part is going to be a major spoiler. If you care about world gen spoilers stop reading right here.

All of the possible mountains in the tenth world are basically known at this point. The highest mountains even have names. This is because the map of Valheim is basically a random location within a slightly bigger map which is the same every time. If you have explored a good chunk of your map you can probably identify the mountain you're looking at, and you can see how it ranks compared to the other peaks.

If the map is a circle plonked down at random in a larger map, how do no islands ever reach the edge?

The islands are simply cut off near the edge I think. The big map is kinda small too, while it is possible to find two seeds that won't share any landmass at all, I believe it is way more likely that landmass is shared between any given two seeds.
