Large bodies of water causing game to freeze

Since I first started playing, being near/on large bodies of water (bays and oceans) will inevitably make the game and my screen freeze. I've spent long periods of time just avoiding going near them to test if it still happens, and the game runs almost indefinitely without issues if I avoid the coast. Just wondering if anyone else has/had this issue or if its just a case of my outdated computer encountering something it can't handle. Also it's not right away, the longer I spend near one it just eventually happens, sometimes quickly, sometimes hours into a session, but it always happens if I stay fairly close or go back and forth to the coast. I've also tried to fly over them just to get to new land quickly and it just makes the freeze happen much faster. Definitely will appreciate any feedback at all since I've been trapped in the first two stages of the game for 135 hours.

I played a bunch with a 10 year old machine and had to minimize a lot of my settings to get a steady 30 FPS, but anytime I went near areas I had heavily changed the area geometry for (with lots of digging), the game took a huge hit while it loaded the area. After it was done, it was choppy at best. In my experience, the mountain biome (when it wasn't storming) seemed to be the most optimized, where I could frequently get 60 fps.

I've since upgraded to a very powerful modern machine and I've been able to run the game perfectly on full settings and twice the resolution. I've never had an issue with large bodies of water being the cause of my performance issues, either with this machine or my old one. My starting point and first home was on the ocean front, and I've had several sailing expeditions with no issue.
