I'm pretty sure you're flattening the land to the level you're standing at. So just standing at one sport and flattening everything around would give the appropriate result. Also, I've seen suggestions that you should actually manually raise the land a bit before flattening, then use pick on any spikes/raise on holes, then flatten. That would help to deal with initial irregularities. Doing that actually helped me.

I know about standing in 1 spot and raising, but raising costs a lot of stone and even standing in 1 spot unless you find a near perfectly flat area you need to deal with the limitations on how much it can be flattened. Most of the time the best you'll find is a gentle slope, or area that is open with lots of mini hills you then need to mine down a bit, and raise other bits up to so you don't hit the limit of how far you can manipulate the land.

The current tools work ok for small builds, but if you want to build a small village you either need to accept it being very spread out and put on small plots of land, or you search for a mostly flat area and spend hours flattening it enough.

Don't get me wrong I still love the game, but damn I wish it was easier to prepare land for building.

Why flatten the land at all? Just build a foundation. In my current world we've build a whole village on a hillside and didn't need to flatten land much at all. And by that I mean, what, two buildings out of ten or so got flattened and the rest got stilt foundations. We recently gained access to stone and now I'm paving over a whole sandbar without flattening any of it.

I do build a foundation, the annoying thing is though for every level of foundation you need you limit how big the house can be. If you only want to build everything to be 1 story high it's fine, otherwise it becomes a problem.

In terms of an early access game, this game is a newborn. There is and will be a lot of work ahead, You just gotta roll with the punches when it comes to EA. 2 steps forward 1 step back.

Honestly IMO for how new the game is, it really has a lot to offer. Some EA games take years to get this much content out.

That might be true if the game wasn't in Early Access or active development. But it's in both.

That being said, I don't have a problem with the fishing. Terraforming seems fine too, but I don't do it excessively.

Not tried fishing but ye, terra-forming is the thing I really hope is next on their list of fixes as it's what stops me playing as much. Right now for example I'm trying to setup and area to build a base, and my god I swear I'll be spending more time trying to flatten out the land properly than actually building the damn base.

A simple thing to help honestly would be a hoe upgrade that allows you to flatten the land to a higher degree, I think the current one lets you lower or raise land by 1 unit, so make an upgrade that is 2, and maybe a 3 one. This would give you something to work toward and make terra-forming when you are trying to make a big base later much easier.

Oh ye and definitely less stamina, trying to flatten land when it starts raining is the biggest pain in the ass, you even with the rested buff and 160 stamina it just takes so long to regain your stamina compared to how fast you lose it.

Use less stamina, have an audible alert or screen shake when a fish bites, and make the fish hooked for 1-2 seconds to compensate for lag before it gets away.
