Lox spawns

Are beyond frustrating. I find a plains, clear it out, dock my boat and make a workbench and portal near the coast, and i go out to explore, i come back, 3 loxes randomly appear right next to my boat and are destroying it. Previously there were none at all, so they just conveniently spawn where it's least favourable. It's absurd. Considering dealing with a lox is more pain than dealing with a fuling village.

And i'd argue that loxes are not slow at all, even when "inspecting" they are far faster than you walking. Not sure when but i imagine they buffed them when they added the ability to ride them.
They are slow until they are alerted. Their vision range is 15 tiles (half that of most other creatures) and their alert range is only 6 meters. That's why you can sneak up right next to them, drop some cloud berries, and just wait until they tame.

Its true that they render last but the easy way to solve that issue is to paddle slowly along the coast to give them time to load in and then sail 30 more meters forward or sail back 30 meters and dock in either of those spots. That's twice the distance they can see and as long as you don't do anything noisier than walk or jump they won't come any closer. Then you just have to remember not to walk through their spawn point on the way back to your boat.

You can then walk along the coast and find a place its safer to make more noise and set up your work bench and portal there.

I checked and what seems to have happened is that i unknowingly built a workbench and portal directly on top of their spawn, and when i went to move the bench and portal to a different location close by, their spawns cued and started attacking my boat. In short, pisspoor RNG.

Lox herds (and most enemy groups in general) tend to spawn in the same spots. If you had to clear out a spot before, it's likely they will respawn without some kind of prevention (player base items like workbenches or campfires). In other words, if you had to clear out the coast, plan on re-clearing it, so it's probably best to not park near where something has previously spawned.

That's the thing, there is no indication or way of knowing they are going to spawn there. Lox spawn after everything else for a reason i'm unaware of. And quite frankly, every time i land on a coast to set up a portal, loxes always seem to spawn nearby. Maybe i'm just good at unintentionally predicting where they spawn, but it is something that is genuinely frustrating.

Lox are slow and have poor visual range. They tend to respawn in the same spots each time creatures can respawn after being cleared out so where ever they were standing when you first saw them is where you should place a few camp fires or a work bench or 2. Then they won't respawn there. Any lox that then spawn will do so at the next nearest lox spawn point.

Alternatively you can waste quite a bit of time and tame the ones that are there. They won't wander far from the spawn point and new wild ones won't spawn there as long as the tame ones are on the spawn point.

I have noticed that Lox do tend to "surprise spawn," or it at least seems that way. If they do so, that's when it's best to move your boat, heh.

What one of my friends and I tend to do is look for one of those large boulders as close to shoreline as we can, and set our portal up on top of it, along with a few chests. We more or less beach our boat, in case it does get destroyed (so we can be sure to grab the nails). We put all the black metal in the chests and carry everything else through the portal, and rinse/repeat while we're raiding the area. When all is said and done, we rebuild our boat if we have to, load it with all our Black metal, and continue sailing until we find another continent (or another spot on the same continent).

Honestly, the boat has only been destroyed once or twice using that method. If it's stuck, we just have to push it out, and repair it if needs be. Both times it was actually fulings that destroyed the boat; even the nearby lox didn't bother to come after it, due to their low aggro range.

Yeah, luckily i had picked up my portal as i was planning on moving it further up before they had spawned. There was a large rock close by, and i went just behind it on higher ground to set up a quick small farm for flax and barley, i was maybe a workbench's range away from the original area when they spawned, and i only knew they spawned as i heard my boat getting destroyed. Originally i thought it was a fuling maybe as i could easily deal with that, 2 loxes i could not.

I have build the portal on top of the rock after i killed them, but considering the size of the plains biome i was at, which is probably the biggest i have been in, still am exploring it, their spawn location was right where i docked.
